Berlin Town Board Highlights

February 15, 2023 By Eastwick Press

by Chris Tergliafera
The Department of Health didn’t approve the amended plans for the water tower project that would have removed the booster station on Plank Rd. Removal of the station would have saved the project roughly $297,000. Adding the station back in to the plans will put the project over budget. It’s currently unclear what can be adjusted or how to keep the project under budget.

The first responder tax exemption was approved via resolution. This would give volunteer firefighters and ambulance company members, as well as un-remarried spouses of volunteers who are killed in the line of duty, a 10% property tax reduction.

Brunswick Water District Shortfall a Concern

February 15, 2023 By Eastwick Press

by Doug La Rocque
Brunswick Water and Sewer Department Superintendent Bill Bradly had some bad news for the Brunswick Town Board at their February meeting on Thursday the 9th. Seems what they are being charged by the City of Troy for metered water usage will be about $32,000 more than what users are estimated to be billed. Supervisor Phil Herrington summed up the feeling of the Board members nicely by saying this is not good. Why the shortfall? Mr. Bradley offered several reasons. Water that runs through hydrants is not measured, as are some other usages. What is troubling, however, is the discovery that an unknown number of people have installed bypass valves on their private meters, meaning some—if not all—of their water usage is not measured and therefore not billed. This has been a problem in the past but now seems to be a bit more prolific.

East Nassau Board of Trustees Highlights

February 15, 2023 By Eastwick Press

by Denise Wright
The February 8 meeting of the East Nassau Board of Trustees was a busy one, preparing for 2023.

After approving the payment of the bills and the minutes for the December, January, and public hearing minutes on the code, and enforcement law, during the attorney's report, the Board discussed the New York State Emergency Services exemption bill. The Board focused on providing a 10% tax exemption to thank residents who offer emergency services to the community. This tax exemption provides a 1-10% village exemption for emergency services workers who have between 2 to 5 years of active service in a community. Residents who can get this exemption will have to apply yearly, and the assessor will have to verify the service. Trustee members discussed what criteria the village would like to require. There was some discussion on the length of service needed to get the exemption.
