The October 11th meeting of the East Nassau Board of Trustees was only a little over an hour in length but was packed full of business.

The meeting began with a thank you correspondence from Dave Flemming for donating to the Murdoch Road Bridge. Supervisor Root mentioned that the price for the use of digital towpath will increase by $100 a year. Some updates will provide the village with more modern, up-to-date website management.

It was mentioned that one resident has expressed a concern about speeding on Garfield Road. Supervisor Root will follow up.

Repair Café

September 1, 2023 By Eastwick Press

The Columbia NE Repair Café and the Climate Smart Committees of Chatham, New Lebanon, Austerlitz, and the Village of East Nassau, have collaborated to host a repair café on Saturday, September 23rd, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Hoags Corners Firehouse, 7237 NY 66.

A repair café event is a free, volunteer-run event for the whole community. Whether you have a broken lamp, a bike with a flat tire, or a chair leg that needs mending, a repair café helps to divert items from the landfill, teaches valuable fixing skills, and brings neighbors together to help one another. We encourage visitors to engage with our experts to learn more about repair. There will be refreshments and plenty of socializing. While the event is free, donations are welcomed to help us with future events and supply costs.

East Nassau Board of Trustees Highlights

July 26, 2023 By Eastwick Press

by Denise Wright
While the July 19th meeting of the East Nassau Board of Trustees was lengthy, Mayor Jeff Root hoped to address several items to shorten agendas for future meetings.

Before the meeting, there was a public hearing on a minor 2-Lot Subdivision on Woodard Road. The 27.36 acres will be divided into a 23.65 parcel and a 3.71 acre. The SEQRA process and subdivision were approved.

Long-time village resident and zoning board member Gerald Tremblay was appointed as a new board member. Tremblay filled the board vacancy when Jeff Root became Mayor but had to resign from the zoning board.

Attorney Catalano reviewed a resolution for expanding residency requirements for appointed officials. The resolution was revised to allow designated employees to live within the county, but the board and committee members must be village residents. Since there has been an increase in speeding incidents, a resolution will be drawn up to lower village roads’ speed limit to 25 mph. He is also attempting to attain a litigator to assist with some enforcement actions within the village and should have it finalized for the next meeting.

There is usually a period of adjustment when administrations change in village government, and East Nassau's village board meeting on May 10 was no exception. Long-time trustee Jeff Root conducted his first board meeting as mayor and clarified many questions ranging from financial to code enforcement issues.

Presently Jeanine McCarthy, the village treasurer, has been completing the NYS Constitutional Tax Limit & Property tax limit filings, tax bills, and the comptroller's reports. All are in, but she will be waiting to see if any revisions need to be made within the next few weeks. She hopes to revise the tax write-up for the website.

East Nassau Board of Trustees Highlights

February 15, 2023 By Eastwick Press

by Denise Wright
The February 8 meeting of the East Nassau Board of Trustees was a busy one, preparing for 2023.

After approving the payment of the bills and the minutes for the December, January, and public hearing minutes on the code, and enforcement law, during the attorney's report, the Board discussed the New York State Emergency Services exemption bill. The Board focused on providing a 10% tax exemption to thank residents who offer emergency services to the community. This tax exemption provides a 1-10% village exemption for emergency services workers who have between 2 to 5 years of active service in a community. Residents who can get this exemption will have to apply yearly, and the assessor will have to verify the service. Trustee members discussed what criteria the village would like to require. There was some discussion on the length of service needed to get the exemption.
