Local Conservation Groups Will Merge

Two nationally accredited land trusts in Rensselaer County, the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA) and Rensselaer Land Trust (RLT), have begun taking steps to merge. 

After years of parallel and collaborative conservation work, the boards of directors of both organizations voted in March 2023 to take this step to advance their mutual goal of conservation in Rensselaer County.

SMITH 5K and Wellness Day

On April 29th, the Berlin Middle/High School (BMHS) held its 7th Annual SMITH 5K/1 Mile Fun Run and Family Fun/Wellness Day. This community event is a special day not only for the way in which it brings our community together, but also for how it supports a wonderful local scholarship.

The SMITH Scholarship goes to a graduating senior who demonstrates the outstanding qualities of Service-Merit-Integrity-Truth-Honor.

A Mystery No Longer

In our April 28th paper, Bart McLean, on behalf of the Friends of Petersburgh History and Petersburgh Public Library, posted a challenge to see if our readers could identify a mystery house as yet unidentified on the Petersburgh Library’s local history page. Among the several different replies received, Wanda Webster’s reply stood out as having actual photos of the house in various years in her family photo album. With a little further research with help from our Town Historian, we were able to positively identify the mystery house as the one on Armsby Road in Petersburgh,

Business Association Annual Auction

On Saturday, June 3rd, the Poestenkill Business Association, (PBA), will hold our annual benefit auction at the Sullivan-Jones VFW Post on Main St/Route 355. The Auction will start promptly at 10 am, with viewing to begin at 9 am. Assorted items such as loads of top soil, crusher run, stone, landscaping mulch, fire wood, and professional services donated by local businesses will be available for bid along with previously owned but sought after household, yard, and miscellaneous items. Wild Edibles

Grafton Historical Society 

On Wednesday, May 17th, at 7 pm, at Grafton Town Hall, the Grafton Historical Society will sponsor its May program, wild edibles. 

Janis Fallon, an environmental attorney, engineer, herbalist, and a Rensselaer County Master Gardener trainee will talk about foraging in our yards and the areas around us for wild plants that are not only good as food, but also wonderful for health and wellness. There will be recipes and samples to try. This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. The building is handicapped accessible.

Annual Armed Forces Day Ceremony

Saturday, May 20th, at noon, at the Maple Grove Cemetery, Main St, will be the annual Armed Forces Day Ceremony. This ceremony remembers the 103 men from the Town of Hoosick who died while serving in the United States military from the Civil War through 1959.

This year the Red Knights Motorcycle Club will be co-hosting this important ceremony, which will begin with the singing of the National Anthem by Abbi Weeden. It will feature the raising of the Armed Forces service flags by Red Knights Club members. The names of the 103 men will be read with a bell chime for each. Please join us to remember and honor these heroes.

Tobias J. Cornell – Obituary

Stephentown – Tobias J. “Toby” Cornell, 42, of Calvin Cole Road, passed away suddenly on Friday, May 5th, 2023 at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy after being stricken ill on Thursday. Born in Pittsfield, Toby was a lifelong resident of Stephentown. He was a 1998 graduate of the Berlin High School. Toby started his working career at XCA Composite Mfg. in Stephentown and at the time of his passing had worked for 10 years at Evonik in Waterford where he was a Chemical Mixer. In his spare time Toby enjoyed Star Trek and anything related to space adventure, computer gaming, listening to music, nature and could be found at home cooking great food. New Brain Fitness Foundation Opening in Hoosick Falls

The Brain Fitness Foundation is excited to announce a soft launch event social on Sunday, May 7th. Those invited will have a chance to meet the staff and learn more about the Foundation's programs and services. Please note that this is a soft launch, and not open to the general public. A grand opening will be scheduled at a later date. 

By providing cutting-edge, neuroscience-based programs and personalized treatments to improve the mental well-being, brain health, and cognitive function of children, military veterans, and senior citizens in the region, the Brain Fitness Foundation is dedicated to revitalizing communities through transformative mental health care.
