Annual Food Closet Corned Beef Dinner

The Berlin Food Closet’s annual corned beef and cabbage dinner will be held on Saturday, March 16th, from 4 to 6 pm. The cost for the take-out meal is $17 for adults and $8 for children. The dinner will include corned beef and cabbage, potatoes, carrots, applesauce, roll, and dessert. The dinner will be available at the United Methodist Church at Berlin, 17 South Main Street. Reserve your tickets today by calling 518-658-2942 or 518-795-0509.

Irma M. Hammersmith – Obituary

Petersburgh – Irma M. Hammersmith, 93, of Berlin passed peacefully on Thursday morning, February 29th, 2024. Born on Berlin Mountain on September 9th, 1930, Irma was the daughter of the late Albert and Elsie (Maxon) Yerden, and wife for 66 years to the late Joseph P. Hammersmith.

In the mid-1940s, Irma was employed at the shirt factory in Berlin and later worked at W. J. Cowee winding floral picks. In 1949 Irma and Joe built their house on the top of Berlin Mountain on a parcel of land that was given to them by Irma’s parents. They were married in December 1950. [Read more…] about Irma M. Allen C. Bentley Jr. – Obituary

Berlin – Allen C. Bentley, Sr., 80, passed away peacefully on Sunday, March 3rd, 2024 at his daughter Jean’s home in Petersburgh. He was born in Berlin on November 6th, 1943, the son of the late Jesse and Dorothy (Yerton) Bentley.

Allen was raised in Berlin and was a graduate of Berlin Central School. He was employed as a factory worker for many years. Most recently, he was a school bus driver for the Berlin Central School District for over 20 years before retiring in 2007. [Read more…] about Allen C. Bentley Jr. – Obituary

Berlin Food Closet Preps for Busy Season

Traditionally fall is a busy time for the food closet and this year is no exception. Not only are new families using the food closet, the cost of food is constantly on the rise. The Berlin Community Food Closet serves the residents of Berlin and Stephentown, and is open the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 to 11 am, or by appointment.

This summer more than 50 children were provided lunch supplies for eight weeks. Many thanks to local donors as well as Stewart’s and WGY.

Wreaths Across America

On Tuesday, September 19th, the Wreaths Across America (WAA) Mobile Education Exhibit (MEE) will be at the New Lebanon Jr/Sr High School, 14665 Rt. 22. The event, sponsored by the Stephentown Area Veterans together with the New Lebanon and Berlin American Legions, will be open to students from 7:30 am to 2:30 pm, and the public from 3:30 to 7 pm.

John E. Blowers – Obituary

August 24, 2023 By Eastwick Press

Berlin – John Elwin Blowers, 86, passed away peacefully following a short illness on Wednesday, August 16th, 2023.  Born on March 28th, 1937, he was the son of Elwin Blowers and Sarah Joebchen of Berlin, NY. John attended school in Berlin and was a life long resident of Berlin. John served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1957. Returning to Berlin, he started his career as a carpenter with Lloyd and Dee Goodermote Builders and then joined the North Atlantic Carpenters Union where he worked on many projects throughout the capital region. John was married to Jane Bryant Blowers who passed in 1966. John was a member and past Commander of the Berlin American Legion Post. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. After retirement he and his long-time companion Jennie Ellsworth spent winters in DeLand, Florida until Jennie’s passing in 2020.   [Read more…] about John E.
