Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp

The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office is accepting applications for the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp.

​The Summer Camp is for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 who, because of economic reasons, would not have an opportunity to attend a summer camp or enjoy a summer vacation. Campers must be up-to-date on immunizations and have received a medical physical after May 1, 2022. This year’s camp session runs from Sunday, July 23 through Saturday, July 29.

​Detailed information about the camp may be found on the New York State Sheriffs’ Institute website, www.sheriffsinstitute.org.

​Applications may be obtained by contacting the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office at 518-266-1903. Qualified campers will be accepted on a first come, first served basis. The deadline for submissions is March 30.

38th Annual Ice Fishing Contest Rescheduled

Due to warmer than usual temperatures, the 38th annual ice fishing contest at Grafton Lakes State Park has been rescheduled for Saturday, Feb. 11, from 5:30 am to 2 pm. Join in on the fun as several-hundred anglers brave the cold temperatures for their chance to make a winning catch on several of the park’s ponds. February is starting with some cold arctic air giving us high hopes for the contest next Saturday.

Registration will run from 5:30 to 11 am, or 12:30 pm for youth, in the park’s maintenance building, accessible via the Main Entrance. There is a $10 registration fee required for all participants ages 16 or older, with no fee for children under 16.

Powers Claims Runner-Up

At Inaugural NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational

Tallulah Powers was runner-up at 165 pounds in the inaugural NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational held at Onondaga Community College. She was one of only three finalists from Section 2, and the only Runner Up. The meeting of 204 of the State’s top female wrestlers is the first of its kind in New York State. Just this year New York sanctioned Girls Wrestling giving it an Emerging Sport status. Powers was selected as Section 2’s top entry at the 165 pound class and was seeded first in her 16 girl bracket.

Celebrating Retiring Board President Deborah Tudor

On Tuesday, January 25, Cheney Library honored Ms. Deborah Tudor for her 12 years of service on the Cheney Library Board of Trustees. During her tenure as a trustee, Ms. Tudor made immense contributions to physical improvements of the library’s property. Some of these projects include the installation of a propane fireplace, creation of the downstairs Children’s Room, and the renovation of the downstairs Multipurpose Room. As President, Ms. Tudor also oversaw the installation of the library’s main parking lot, van-accessible parking area, wheelchair access ramp, air conditioning systems, and flagpole. These improvements have made a significantly positive impact on library services. Under Ms. Tudor’s leadership, the library drastically increased its accessibility, sustainability, and number of technological resources.

This Bet Aims to Beat Hunger

Josh Young says he doesn’t know how he would live without his beard, but he is happy to shave it off now that he lost a bet. He asked his loyal shoppers at his New Lebanon Farmers Market & Grocery to step up to the plate to aid those whose food benefits ran out, promising that if they raised $10,000 he would shave off his beard.

The market runs a companion food aid program that extends the benefits provided by the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP). That program, called Market Match, started the year with a grant of $17,500 from Berkshire Ag Ventures, whose Market Match Fund awarded more than $100,000 to a number of other Berkshire-area farmers markets that offered similar programs in 2022.

Using Medical Cannabis to Reduce Opioid Dosages

The New York State Department of Health today announced that its latest multi-agency study detailing the association of receiving medical cannabis for 30 days or longer with a reduction in prescription opioid dosages has been published in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) Network Open.

Troy Drinking Water Notice

Drinking water quality monitoring conducted by the Troy Public Utilities department has found elevated levels of lead in some of the 60 homes and buildings tested. Even though the source of water for the city is free of lead, the test samples taken from inside representative residential homes show an exceedance of lead possibly due to lead water services lines or interior lead plumbing.

The City of Troy is committed to the removal of all lead service lines from our community. City officials request your cooperation. If you live in a home built prior to 1975 and have not had a water service inspection at your home by the Department of Public Utilities, you should contact the department as soon as possible at 518-237-0343. There is no charge for a technician to come to your home for an inspection.   

There are several actions underway to address the lead in drinking water concerns. A postcard will be sent to city residents via mail with additional information and instructions. A Public Utilities Committee meeting of the City Council will be scheduled, and the Council will set spending parameters for funding that is available to assist residents who need to replace lead service pipes. 

38th Annual Winter Festival and Polar Plunge

Snow showers didn’t stop one hundred courageous plungers from taking part in the 38th Annual Winter Festival’s polar plunge on Saturday morning, January 21, at Grafton Lakes State Park (GLSP). Spectators observed plungers rush into the icy water to benefit the Our Lady of the Snow Parish Food Pantry. 

The polar plunge wasn’t the only attraction keeping visitors entertained at GLSP. Plenty of winter fun was had both outdoors and inside the Welcome Center. Outdoor activities included snow bowling, kick sledding, carriage rides, chainsaw demos from Rayzor’s Edge, warming up at a giant bonfire, hanging out in a snow fort, and meeting sled dogs, northland newfoundlands, and bloodhounds.
