Annual Residential Brush Burning Ban

March 16, 2023 By Eastwick Press

Submitted by the NYSDEC
New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced the annual statewide ban prohibiting residential brush burning will run through May 14. Even though some areas of the state remain blanketed in snow, warming temperatures can quickly cause wildfire conditions to arise. Open burning of debris is the single-largest cause of spring wildfires in New York State. When temperatures warm and the past fall's debris and leaves dry out, wildfires can start and spread easily, further fueled by winds and a lack of green vegetation. Each year, DEC Forest Rangers extinguish dozens of wildfires that burn hundreds of acres. In addition, local fire departments, many of which are staffed by volunteers, all too often have to leave their jobs and families to respond to wildfires caused by illegal debris fires. DEC will post the fire danger map for the 2023 fire season on DEC's website once there is a moderate risk anywhere in New York.

Brunswick Cell Tower Extension a Done Deal

March 16, 2023 By Eastwick Press

by Doug La Rocque
Even before the ink on the application was dry, the Brunswick Planning Board learned that a planned 20-foot extension of the cell tower located on land at the intersection of Creek Road and Menemsha Lane is a go, if Blue Sky Towers meets the minimum federal criteria. Under a federal law adopted during the Obama administration, neither local nor state officials can stop it. The law allows for a one-time increase in tower height, in this case, to add an AT&T antenna array above the current Verizon Wireless array already on the tower.

Installation Banquet and Awards Dinner

March 8, 2023 By Eastwick Press

Submitted by Sidewinder Photography
On Saturday, March 4th, The Raymertown Fire Company came together for their 75th Annual Banquet and Awards dinner at the Pittstown Volunteer Ambulance Corp banquet hall. This year, on top of the multiple awards normally given out, a special Future Firefighter Award was presented to six-year-old Lucas Bulson.

Chief Robert Beebe told the crowd in attendance, “This person has the uncanny ability to bring a smile and usually a chuckle out of every member he comes into contact with when he is at the station. That is not all he has done; he also rolls hose, checks the tightness of the lugs on the hose and the air pressure of our vehicles, and just generally elevates the mood of everyone in the immediate proximity.”

Lucas has a true passion for the fire service and wants to be a firefighter when he gets older. The Raymertown Fire Company takes great pride in the fact that they have a family-friendly atmosphere, and love to pass on traditions of the fire service to up-and-coming members. STRIDE 100K Vertical Challenge

March 8, 2023 By Eastwick Press

Submitted by STRIDE Adaptive Sports

STRIDE Adaptive Sports, an organization that levels the playing field for youth and veterans with disabilities, recently announced that its biggest fundraising event of the year, the 100,000 Vertical Challenge Ski Race, raised over $83,000.

The event took place on Monday, February 27th, when more than 54 participants completed 100,000 vertical feet of skiing and snowboarding at Jiminy Peak. This marathon athletic feat raised funds that make sports and recreation accessible to everyone, regardless of their disability. Several corporations and foundations added their support, along with the great efforts of the participants through peer-to-peer fundraising competition. At its heart, the event is more a competition of fundraising, and the skiing is just a celebration. All proceeds will fund 18 different sports and recreation programs for people with disabilities, and in particular our 3 mountain resort adaptive snowsports programs at Jiminy Peak, Catamount, and Titus Mountains.

For program information, contact Program Director Allison Ryan at 518-598-1279, or aryan@stride.org. A detailed list of STRIDE sponsors can be viewed at www.stride.org/about/sponsors/.

The Hoosick Falls St. Patrick’s Parade and Irish Fest will celebrate its 32nd anniversary on Saturday, March 11th. Over 30 years ago, local Irishmen Mike Conway and TJ Carmody wanted to find a way to keep their culture and history alive in the Hoosick area, and decided a parade was the ticket.

The 2023 Grand Marshal, Arthur M. Hyde Jr., is of Irish descent beginning in Waterford, Ireland when his ancestors came to America settling in Bennington, Vermont. Art was born in Bennington, VT in 1937, moving to Hoosick Falls at the age of two and has called this home ever since.

The parade will begin at 1 pm from Wood Park. This year’s parade will feature Taconic Pipe Band, Yankee Doodle Band, Fyfes and Drumms of Olde Saratoga, The Cambridge Band, and many floats and marchers.

After the parade is the Irish Festival at the Hoosick Armory and other Hoosick Falls area locations. The Armory will host the band Craic Agus Ceol with Irish music. There will be Irish Dance with Hubbard Hall Irish Dance, Taconic Bagpipes, and your favorite foods from local pubs and restaurants.
