Grafton Summer Festival

This year’s Grafton Summer Festival will be Saturday, July 22nd, from 9 am to 3 pm, in the Town Park on Route 2 with vendors and booths setting up around the town green at 8 am.

There will be music in the Gazebo with Chris Rowe, Bards O’ the Glen will be performing traditional music of the Old World from 10 am to 3 pm, and sharing the stage will be Christina Reger.

Community Picnic and Family Fun Day

On Saturday, July 15th, from 10 am to 3 pm, at the Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, Rt. 67, The Friends of the Bennington Battlefield and the Hoosick Township Historical Society invite you to bring your picnic baskets for a free community picnic and family fun day.

Grills and picnic tables will be readily available. There will be a food and ice cream truck as well. Eric Buddington and friends will provide period music and even teach some of the dances from long ago. There will be live demonstrations of an Edwardian Picnic, 18th century weaponry, kids activities, guided tours of the battlefield, and pit cooking.

We have also brought back the trolly, and will host three free scheduled, narrated trolley rides from the Battlefield to the Bennington Monument, where you will be able to spend some time and ride to the top of the monument at a reduced rate, before being brought back to the park. You will want to sign up for the trolley early. The first trip will start at 10:30 am.

Route 2 Bridge Removal Scheduled

The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) is advising motorists that the intersection of State Route 2 and State Route 22 in Petersburgh will be closed on Friday, June 23rd, at 6 pm, to allow for the removal of the State Route 2 bridge as part of a replacement project. State Route 22 is scheduled to reopen by Monday, June 26th, at 6 am, while State Route 2 will remain closed through the end of November while a new bridge is constructed. The following detours will be posted:

Painting Wins National Competition

Berlin High School (BHS) senior Daniel Rivera’s powerful painting, Tears of Miss Justice: Mourning a Broken System, is a national award winner. Daniel won the Best in Show award in the annual Democracy Collection Student Art Competition sponsored by the National Art Education Association and the Art in Embassies of the US Department of State. This competition provides an incentive for students to explore democracy through the creation of art. Daniel won not only the top award for the Northeastern Region, but Best in Show out of the entire country.

Berlin 4th of July Parade

2023 Berlin 4th of July parade Grand Marshal Wally O’Neil, along with the entire parade committee, is excited to share music prior to the parade provided by the Trombone band, and music immediately following the parade at the American Legion, 15 Railroad Avenue, during the chicken barbecue, provided by our friends from the Z-Barn. 

Parade step-off is at 11 am and is sure to be a true celebration of Brave Americans: past, present and future, our theme for this year’s parade. As it has been for 125 years, the entire area celebrates America together on July 4th, rain or shine; come out and be a part of this great tradition.

Two Arrested in Larceny Investigation

Following up on a story we reported on last week, on Saturday, June 10th, the Hoosick Falls Police Department took over 20 reports of larceny from motor vehicles in multiple areas of the village. With the assistance of NYSP and NYSP BCI, two males were identified as suspects. On Sunday, June 18th, the Hoosick Falls Police Department arrested Joshua Richter, age 20, and Timothy Sparks, age 18, both of Bennington, VT, on three counts of Grand Larceny, seven counts of Trespassing, and five counts of Petit Larceny. Both suspects were processed and released on appearance tickets to appear in the Village of Hoosick Falls Court on Thursday, July 20th, at 6:30pm.

Rutland Railroad Historical Society Presentation

“Rutland Railroad's Chatham Subdivision: What the Railroad Meant to Our Communities,” a presentation by Dave Saums of Rutland Railroad Historical Society, will be held on Sunday, June 25th, at 2 pm. The event, hosted by the Lebanon Valley Historical Society (LVHS), will be held at the New Lebanon Town Hall, 14755 Rt. 22, and will include many historic, and in some cases previously unseen, photographs of the stations, communities, operations, and people of the former Rutland Railroad line that once ran from North Bennington, VT to Chatham, NY.
