Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office Corrections Bureau announces the retirement of Correctional Sergeant, Anthony C. Patricelli, after nearly 33 years of service. ​Sergeant Patricelli began his career in corrections with the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office on December 8th, 1990. Over the span of his career, Sergeant Patricelli held many vital roles within the Sheriff’s Office including Sheriff’s Emergency Response Team (SERT) member, as well as being an original member of the Emergency Services Unit (ESU).

Class of 2023 Valedictorian and Salutatorian

Congratulations to Elsie Corbett, daughter of Rebekkah and Daniel Corbett of Stephentown, the 2023 Valedictorian of Berlin High School (BHS). Elsie is graduating with an Advanced Regents diploma with honors and will attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) this fall. As a Mountaineer, Elsie is enrolled in the most rigorous academic schedules that Berlin offers, taking several advanced placement courses. These included an accelerated track in math and science since eighth grade, and honors english and social studies since ninth grade.

Two Convictions Secured in GIVE Cases

Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly has announced two convictions were secured in Gun Involved Violence Elimination Initiative (GIVE) cases.

Hector Rodriquez, 35, of Troy, pled guilty to Criminal Possession of a Weapon-2 Loaded Firearm, a class C violent felony. Rodriguez possessed a loaded firearm in the area of the Corliss Park apartments, which he used to shoot three victims. Rodriquez is facing 15 years in state prison with 5 years post supervision when he is sentenced on June 13th.

2023 Top Ten Seniors

Valedictorian – Olivia Record is the daughter of Heidi and Cory Record. Olivia will be majoring in environmental studies at Saint Michael's College in Colchester, VT.

Salutatorian – Kobe McManus is the son of Ivonne and Roger McManus. Kobe plans to pursue a degree in computer engineering at Case Western Reserve University (CWRU).

KISS Program

The Keeping Identities of Seniors Safe (KISS) program, sponsored by Columbia County Clerk Holly Tanner, will be taking place from Monday, June 5th through Friday, June 23rd. Documents that should be shredded include those containing your account numbers, passwords, PINs, date of birth, social security number, and more. Documents can be brought to New Lebanon Town Hall, 14755 Route 22, Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, from 9 am to 5 pm.

John H. Kanopka – Obituary

Berlin – John Henry “Jack” Kanopka passed away in the comfort of his home on Sunday, May 28th, 2023. Born in Pittsfield on June 6th, 1949, he was the son of the late Casimir and Dorothy (Chittenden) Kanopka.

Jack grew up in Berlin and graduated from Berlin High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. Back home, he worked for the New York State Department of Transportation for 35 years until his retirement in 2002. Jack volunteered much of his time to local fire departments, beginning in Stephentown from 1972 to 1975, and then for Berlin for 33 years where he served as Chief. A Day of Remembrance

Hoosick Post #40 American Legion Memorial Day ceremonies will take place on Monday, May 29th, in Wood Park. Join us as we honor the men and women that made the ultimate sacrifice for our country, including John F. Galvin, Jerry J. Jones, James Keegan, Richard Motsiff, John Jack Valentine, and Rich Gorman, veterans who have passed away during the past year.

Memorial Day rites will be stepping off at 8:15 am, from the corner of Main St. and Wilder Ave, and stop at multiple locations to honor veterans at their respective memorials.

Shining a Light on Old Traditions

On Monday, May 29th, Memorial Day, at 2 pm, the Lebanon Valley Historical Society (LVHS) will be having a program at the New Lebanon Town Hall, with a special guest Captain Richard (Dick) Pusateri, Chaplain Corps. The idea of having this program on Memorial Day is to shine a light on a very old tradition in the United States military that dates back to 1775, is an important part of all branches today, and is largely unknown to people who have not served.

Petersburgh Town Board Highlights

The May 15th Petersburgh Town Board meeting was brief but quite informative. 

The first item discussed was the bridge/culvert project. According to town board member Heinz Noeding, the project is going as planned, and the hope is to finish it by mid-June. While there has been some need for adjustments to the traffic flow near the project, it was reported that a 3-way stop sign was not approved, but DOT will do some lane widening near the post office to assist with the traffic pattern. 

The town supervisor reported that the $151,000 in ARPA funds was reported for the 2022-2023 fiscal year. The fire district, parking lot repaving, and historian records were part of the approximate $55,000 part of the final submission to the state. The roof, the water district water diffuser, and parks will also be using some of the funds. There is approximately $20,000 left of the funds that need to be allocated.
