Annual Emergency Services Memorial

On Sunday, October 1st, Rensselaer County came together to remember the work and service of first responders who passed away during the previous year at the annual Emergency Services Memorial.

The Memorial Service recognized 73 fire, police, and ambulance members, whose names will be added to the county memorial at the Public Safety complex in Troy.

Vietnam Veteran Statue Unveiled

Capping off a day filled with Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit veterans events, members of the Stephentown Veterans joined the Director and Trustees of The Stephentown Memorial Library (SML) at the library at 7 pm on Thursday, September 21st to unveil a statue of a wounded Vietnam veteran available to view at the library on an ongoing basis.

President of SML’s Board of Trustees Jennifer Peabody kicked off the unveiling, welcoming all assembled to the library. Jen spoke of what a wonderful opportunity it is for the library to greet and support members of Stephentown Veterans as well as other town organizations at events like this, strengthening and reinforcing our community bonds. She reminded those gathered that SML’s mission has always included the honoring of Stephentown’s active military and veterans.

Christmas Caroling Fundraiser

The Berlin Chamber Choir is now taking reservations for our 3rd annual Christmas Caroling Fundraiser. The chorus and select instrumentalists will be at Fall Fest on October 14th taking reservations. This year we will have two buses so we can accommodate the entire Berlin Central School District community. Meet the Candidates

On Monday, October 16th, the Poestenkill Business Association will present our annual Meet the Candidates night forum at the Poestenkill Sullivan-Jones VFW Post on Main Street. All candidates running for county sheriff, town supervisor, town board, town highway superintendent, town clerk, and town judge have been invited to attend and present their respective positions.

Doors will open at 6:30 pm, and the program will begin at 7 pm, with all candidates offering a concise position statement. Pre-submitted questions from town residents will then be read by the moderator to the respective candidates. If time remains, questions may be entertained from the audience. Refreshments will be provided.

Nightmare on Elm Street

Nightmare on Elm Street returns to the Hoosick Armory, 80 Church St, on Saturday, October 28th. Come for an evening of masquerade, music, and food with a Halloween theme. Doors open at 6:30 pm. The popular band West Side Drive takes the stage at 7 pm. A lucky draw auction and a costume contest will also be held. Costumes aren’t required but are encouraged.

Tickets are $20 per person and $30 per couple, and can be purchased online at www.hoosickarmory.org. Tickets can also be purchased at the door. You must be 21 or older to join the festivities.

Operation S.A.V.E.

On Friday, October 13th, at 6 pm, at New Lebanon Town Hall, 14755 Route 22, the New Lebanon Quality of Life Committee is sponsoring Operation S.A.V.E. suicide prevention training. With Operation S.A.V.E. training, you will:

• Learn a brief overview of suicide.
• Hear about suicide myths and misinformation.
• Learn the risk factors for suicide.
• Learn about the S.A.V.E. model: signs of suicide, asking about suicide, validating feelings, encouraging help, and expediting treatment.

Fire at the Former Fox Hollow Restaurant

On Sunday, September 24th, at approximately 12:15 am, fire departments were called to respond to a structure fire at a single family home in North Petersburgh. Agencies from Rensselaer, Washington, and Bennington counties responded to assist with the blaze, which occurred at the former Fox Hollow Restaurant. The building was a total loss, but the lone occupant was able to escape without injury. A member of the Petersburgh Fire Company did suffer a medical emergency during the discharge of duty, and fortunately is reported to be home and feeling better. As of this writing the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

2nd Annual Cow Plop

On Saturday, October 7th, from 10 am to 3 pm, in conjunction with the Walter A. Wood Tractor Show, the Hoosick Falls FFA Alumni and Supporters will present their 2nd Annual Cow Plop fundraising event to support the Hoosick Falls FFA student chapter.

There will be an array of vendors, tasty food, activities for the kids and adults, a Chinese raffle, youth groups, and a bake sale. There will also be a corn hole competition and a pumpkin decorating contest going on throughout the day while we wait for the cow to plop at 2 pm.

September Character Assembly

On September 15th, Berlin Elementary School (BES) Principal Ms. Kent and Assistant Principal Ms. Cataldo hosted BES’ first monthly Character Education assembly of the school year for students in kindergarten through 5th grade.

The BES’ Character Education committee focused its first monthly assemblies on the character trait of respect. Respect was defined for the students as accepting somebody for who they are, even when they are different from you, or you don’t agree with them.
