November 7, 2024 By Eastwick Press

Submitted by the Hoosick Falls Communications Department
The Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS) National Honor Society (NHS), recently held its annual Induction Ceremony. Sixteen new members were inducted, bringing the total student membership to thirty-five. The NHS is open to students in grades 11–12 who meet specific eligibility requirements set by their school’s chapter. Students must have a certain GPA, must complete an interview process, and are evaluated based on their commitment and demonstration of the Four Pillars: Scholarship, Service, Leadership, and Character.

HFCS’s NHS Chapter is known as the Philip Leonard Chapter. As many in the community are aware, Mr. Leonard recently passed away. He is known within the halls of HFCS as “the man who built the school.” His investment in the school and community of Hoosick Falls is the perfect example of what it means to uphold the Four Pillars of the NHS, as he was a true champion in the community.

Clay Target Team

October 24, 2024 By Eastwick Press

The Berlin MHS Clay Target Team shot their final week (Week 5) scores of the fall season on Sunday, October 20th. Two of our team got perfect scores of 25 on their first rounds. Landon Demers received a 25 on his first round and a 20 on his second for a weekly score of 45. Kyle Collen received a 25 on his first round and a 24 on his second round for a weekly score of 49. In all, we had five of our seven team members receive weekly scores in the forties. Our two new members, Lucas Demers and Grant Kernes, did a fantastic job by turning in weekly scores of 38 with each having one score in the twenties. We should be finishing the season in first place in our conference. They had a wonderful season.

Big Apple Crunch

October 24, 2024 By Eastwick Press

Submitted by Hoosick Falls Central School Communications
Early this month, Hoosick Falls Central School (HFCS) elementary students, grades UPK – 4, participated in a fun competition organized by the FarmOn! Foundation. Every year, schools in New York are invited to host a Big Apple Crunch Event and to post their event pictures and videos on social media, to be entered into a competition to win a $1,000 Victory Garden from the FarmOn! Foundation. HFCS embraces farm to school practices where and when possible, and their cafeteria purchases all of their apples locally from Perry’s Orchard in Eagle Bridge. Perry’s is owned and operated by Jim and Anita Perry, and was founded in the 1970s. They have approximately 800 apple trees planted on their 5-acre orchard, and feature 10 NY apple varieties. On October 10th, the HFCS PTA handed out apples to everyone in the elementary school, and the students and staff gathered in groups to take the ‘big crunch’ together. Throughout the months of September and October, students enjoyed many apple-themed crafts, learning activities, field trips, and more. This was a fun and healthy way to celebrate fall in upstate NY, and HFCS is hopeful that they will be awarded the funding so they can get gardening.

Many Mountaineers participated in and ran activities, including the spooky haunted house and other fundraisers. Community organizations, such as the Berkshire Bird Paradise, who partnered with the BMHS Art Department, and Berlin Rescue Squad, also participated, showcasing their services and bringing rescues like Thor, a golden eagle to the event. Thank you again to all the vendors and community members who came to the well-attended Mountaineer event.
