A July 4th Tradition Continues

Thanks to all the organizers of the July 4th Parade in the Town of Berlin. Berlin annually holds an Independence Day parade that features everything from fire trucks to farm equipment to floats while drawing a big crowd in the small community.

The always excellent parade was one of the best this year, with beautiful weather and enthusiastic spectators lining the route to see floats and marchers show how fun, energetic, and patriotic the annual event truly is.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event

Submitted by the Rensselaer County Legislature
Rensselaer County, the City of Troy, and the Town of Bethlehem are partnering on an inter-county Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal program for 2024. The program consists of four events providing residents of the participating municipalities the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through normal garbage collection service.

The next event will be Saturday, July 27th at the Town of Schodack Highway Garage in Nassau, 3776 U.S. Route 20.

Participating Municipalities for this event are the Towns of Schodack, Nassau, North Greenbush, Sand Lake, Poestenkill, and Bethlehem, as well as the Cities of Troy and Rensselaer.

The disposal events are a free service available to residents of the participating municipalities only. Advance registration is required, and residents who have not pre-registered will be unable to utilize the program. Residents must

HACA Back-2-School Boost Program

For the 19th year, backpacks are being filled with age-appropriate school supplies for students in grades Pre-K through 6. Requests for backpacks have been rolling in to the pantry as more people are seeking assistance both for food and other necessities for their children. Thanks to the generosity of caring people such as yourself, backpacks, paper, markers, pens, glue, tissue, rulers, pencils, and pencil boxes plus many other items are being gathered and sorted by volunteers.

Suzanne A. Putnam – Obituary

Grafton – Suzanne Avis Putnam was born in Troy on February 17th, 1946 and passed June 30th, 2024. She was predeceased by her mother, Mary “Betty” Sciacco and her step father, Joseph Sciacco, Sr., her father, Charles Moore; her husband, Kent Putnam; and her sister, Nancy Moore. She is survived by her son, Seth Putnam; her brother, Joseph Sciacco Jr. and his wife Patricia; a nephew, Ryan Sciacco; niece, Nicole Sciacco; niece, Allison Kirchner and her husband, Matthew; and a great nephew, Scott Hallenbeck. Suzanne also valued her many close friends.

Suzanne enjoyed helping others, music, painting, landscaping, decorating for various holidays, baking, crafts, and early American life. She was a dedicated Grafton Town Clerk and Town Secretary for over 30 years. [Read more…] about Suzanne A. Putnam – Obituary

Clara S. Gutermuth

Berlin – Clara Sheldon Gutermuth, 103, died Saturday, June 29th, 2024, at The Pines Rehab Center in Easton, MD after a brief illness. She was born on January 31, 1921, in West Rupert, VT, the loving daughter of the late Henry Ruel Sheldon and Helen Ayres Sheldon.

Clara grew up in Hoosick Falls, NY, at the Walter A. Wood estate. She graduated from Hoosick Falls High School and later attended Mildred Elly Business School. In 1940 she married the love of her life, Allen F. Gutermuth. They lived in Berlin, NY all of their married life except for a short period during WWII when she lived in CA while he was in the Navy stationed in Carmel. [Read more…] about Clara S. Gutermuth

Mervin A. Wheatley – Obituary

Berlin – Mervin A. Wheatley, 87, known throughout his life as “Slim,” passed away at his home in Berlin on July 4th, 2024. He was born in Haverhill, NH, to Kenneth and Lillian Wheatley of Bradford, VT. The family moved from Bradford, finally settling in Dutchess County in New York where Slim finished his high school years. Along the way he became a musician and moved to Nashville, TN after high school, where he worked as a staff musician for WSM that owned the Grand Ole Opry. On his return home, Slim eventually gave up music for a few years, married, and started a family.

Slim came back to his musical roots in the 60’s and there he met Linda, who became his partner, and later his wife of over 53 years. They became quite popular in country music playing in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, and Pennsylvania, performing at clubs, stage shows, radio and TV, and making annual trips to Nashville to record. Teachers Receive Sweethearts & Heroes Training

Sweethearts & Heroes recently returned to Hoosick Falls Central School to show educators how they can keep spreading HOPE (Hold On, Possibilities Exist) in their classrooms and beyond.

Tom Murphy and Pat Fish of Sweethearts & Heroes co-facilitated a daylong training for 30 Hoosick Falls middle school teachers on Monday, June 17th.
