Kevin L. Seifridsberger – Obituary

Berlin – Kevin L. Seifridsberger 60, of Rte. 22 Cherry Plain, died on Friday, June 2nd, 2023 at the Samaritan Hospital in Troy, under the care of hospice. Kevin was surrounded by his family and had been battling a long illness. Born in Cohoes, Kevin was the son of the late Gerald J. and Henrietta M. Smyth Seifridsberger and the beloved husband of Edith Gonyea Seifridsberger. Kevin grew up in the “Alps” in the Town of Nassau and was a graduate of the Liberty Christian Academy in 1982. Kevin entered the Navy in 1983 and served on submarines before his discharge in 1987. After the Navy, Kevin worked for Johnson Controls in Albany, then worked in the factory at Taconic Plastics, and lastly was a driver for Earl T. Wadhams Co. in Cambridge until his retirement in 2022 due to illness. Kevin was a model train collector, and enjoyed motorcycle and dirt bike riding. [Read more…] about Kevin L. Berlin 4th of July Parade

Grand Marshal Announced

The 2023 Berlin 4th of July Parade Grand Marshal is Walter H. O’Neil, Jr. Walter, most known as Wally, was born and raised in Troy. After high school in 1964, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He went to basic training in Parris Island, then on to Cherry Point, NC. Wally did two tours of duty in Vietnam as a cook, and was among the first Marines to land in Vietnam in 1966.

John H. Kanopka – Obituary

Berlin – John Henry “Jack” Kanopka passed away in the comfort of his home on Sunday, May 28th, 2023. Born in Pittsfield on June 6th, 1949, he was the son of the late Casimir and Dorothy (Chittenden) Kanopka.

Jack grew up in Berlin and graduated from Berlin High School. He proudly served his country as a member of the United States Army in Germany during the Vietnam War. Back home, he worked for the New York State Department of Transportation for 35 years until his retirement in 2002. Jack volunteered much of his time to local fire departments, beginning in Stephentown from 1972 to 1975, and then for Berlin for 33 years where he served as Chief. Annual Trout Release

On Wednesday, April 26th, Berlin High School students released brown trout they raised this school year into the Little Hoosic River.

This annual event is the culmination of BHS Science teacher Mr. Toole’s Trout in the Classroom project where students raise the brown trout from embryo, to alevin, and finally to fingerling before releasing the trout to fully develop into adults.

National Honor Society Induction

This year’s National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony opened with Berlin High School (BHS) junior Jacob Collen leading the flag salute.

Ms. Karen Day, advisor of the Berlin CSD’s Taconic Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society, started by stating the objective of the NHS chapter. “This chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote working leadership, to stimulate a desire to offer service, and to encourage the development of character in students of the Berlin Central School District,” said Ms. Day.

Charles T. Cinney – Obituary

Berlin – Charles T. Cinney, 83, passed away peacefully after a long illness on February 17th, 2023 with loved ones at his side. Born on July 21st, 1939, he was the son of the late Mary and George Richmond of Petersburgh, NY. 

Charlie was educated in Petersburgh and Hoosick Falls Schools. He was a lifelong Berlin resident who was employed for over 30 years at WJ Cowee in Berlin, and later at the Berlin Central School District for over 20 years in the transportation department as a bus driver and mail carrier. Charlie was a real movie buff and recently went to see the new Elvis movie twice because he loved it so much. He could recall movies from long ago and remember who starred in them. He was an avid wildlife and nature lover and could often be found in the many hollows of the area with his camera in hand, as he was quite the photographer too. Marion S. Crandall – Obituaries

Berlin –  Marion S. Crandall, 83, passed away Tuesday, March 21, 2023, after a long fight with dementia.

Born April 15, 1939, in Petersburgh, NY, she was the daughter of Calvin Goodermote and Dorothy Crandall.

Super Troopers Place 2nd in Video Contest

Congratulations to Berlin Middle/High School (BMHS) Super Troopers. The Rural Schools Association recently announced their 2022-23 Student Video Contest Winners and the Super Troopers 2022/23 Empathy video received second place. The Super Troopers have been awarded $100 from the Rural Association for their second place win. 

Super Troopers has been a character education group at Berlin Central School District since 2011, and was started by a scrappy group of students who wanted to spread some positivity around the school. Their ideas of positivity, mixed with some humor, have been a hallmark of this group. The mantra of having fun without making fun has led this group to make over 50 different videos on various themes, both somewhat serious and not so serious.

Frederick L. Knuetter – Obituary

Hoosick Falls - It is with great sadness that we announce the death of our beloved husband, father, and papa. Frederick L. Knuetter Jr., 63, passed on March 26th at Albany Medical Center.

Fred grew up in Berlin, NY and graduated from Berlin Central School. He loved talking about his adventures of hunting and fishing local brooks with his friends. While living as a young boy in Berlin he learned carpentry from Loyal and Dee Goodermote; there was nothing he couldn’t do.
