1,000 Book Program Launches

On Wednesday, April 5th, students in Ms. Watt's Pre-K class took part in a celebration to kick off the 1,000 Book Project at Walter B. Howard (WBH) Elementary. The 1,000 Book Project is a nationwide initiative for parents and guardians of Pre-K students to read 1,000 books to their child before entering Kindergarten. WBH is adopting the initiative for both Pre-K and Kindergarten in the hopes that each student reads 1,000 books before they enter first grade.

New County Senior Center

Officially Opens

Rensselaer County opened a new senior center in downtown Troy on Wednesday, April 12th that county officials say will be among the best in the entire state. The new county senior center was opened with a ribbon-cutting at City Station on Sixth Avenue, with seniors, county, and local officials. The new center replaces the longtime county senior center on Third Street and includes state-of-the-art services and equipment. Features include an expanded kitchen that can provide hundreds of meals daily for home delivery, grab and go, and dining at the center.

Rescue Squad Fundraiser

In modern society, it can be easy to take for granted many of the services that we just assume will always be there. We go about our day blissfully unaware that many of the services we need most are being carefully tended to for us. One instance of this is The Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad. The Rescue Squad is located at 21 First Street, and currently operates two twenty-year-old ambulances, servicing the greater Hoosick area and beyond since 1957.

Open House and Recruiting Day

STEPHENTOWN VOLUNTEER FIRE DEPARTMENT

The Stephentown Volunteer Fire Department (SVFD) will hold an open house and recruitment drive at the fire station on State Route 43 on Saturday, April 22nd, from 10 am to 2 pm. The event will highlight the duties and rewards that come with being a volunteer. Students can join at age 16-17 as junior members. With no upper age limit, we welcome retirees, especially as drivers. Veterans, scouts, and scouters are a natural fit. Multi-generation organizations enrich the lives of all members.

Hilldale Farm Foundation Scholarship

The Hilldale Farm Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from Rensselaer County students seeking higher education in agriculture and related trades. Applicants should be graduating high school seniors who have resided in Rensselaer County for the last two years, and have been accepted to a college, university, vocational, or trade school in New York State. Suitable majors and trade programs include, but are not limited to, agriculture, horticulture, pre-veterinary studies, food science, welding, diesel mechanics, etc.

Spring Swing

On Friday, May 12th, from 6:30 to 9 pm, at the Hoosick Falls Armory, 80 Church Street, the Immaculate Conception Parish presents “Spring Swing: A Concert” with the Swing Docs Big Band. There will be a cash bar, silent auction, light refreshments, dancing, and more. Tickets are $20 per person, or $35 per couple, and can be purchased at Thorpe’s Pharmacy, the church rectory, or by calling 518-686-5064.

CASDA Award Recipients

Congratulations to Walter B. Howard (WBH) Literacy Coach Val Falco, who will be honored with the Capital Area School Development Association (CASDA) Friends of Education Award. CASDA presents this award to recognize the selfless contributions of individuals who dedicate themselves to serving students and enriching their school communities. 

Ms. Falco has been educating students and fellow teachers for nearly four decades throughout the Capital Region. The WBH community has had the privilege of working with Ms. Falco for the last two years as a literacy coach. Val has a true passion for literacy and helping children find a love for reading and writing.

NY National Guard Holds Groundbreaking for New Facility

New York National Guard and New York state officials launched the construction of a $17 million state-of-the art maintenance facility with a March 31st ceremonial groundbreaking at the headquarters of the 42nd Infantry Division in Troy.

Major General Ray Shields, the adjutant general of New York, joined Jeanette Loy, the commissioner of New York's Office of General Services, in the groundbreaking to mark the start of the project.
