Art Block Open Air Gallery

The Arts Center of the Capital Region is excited to announce it is producing an open air gallery, Troy Art Block, this October. Troy Art Block will be one of the first projects of its kind in New York’s Capital Region. For Troy Art Block, the Arts Center will curate and produce diverse street art at multiple sites in downtown Troy. The goals of Troy Art Block are to create a unique destination for art lovers, curate a distinctive urban experience for visitors and residents who use Troy's alleys as thoroughfares through its historic downtown, and attract customers to Troy's locally-owned businesses.

Medsafe Collection Box Proves Highly Successful

Since its installation at Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), a member of Dartmouth Health, the MedSafe collection box has facilitated retrieval of 2,600 pounds of unwanted and expired medications. The very first collection was conducted on August 16th, 2017. SVMC is the first non-law enforcement 24-hour disposal location in the state of Vermont.

Return the FAVOR Program

Are you an honorably discharged veteran? If so then you can sign up for a Return the FAVOR (Find and Assist Vets of Record) Card. The Return the FAVOR discount card program is administered through Columbia County Clerk Holly Tanner’s office. To receive your card, simply bring your discharge papers (DD2 I 4) to the office for filing, fill out one simple form, and walk out with your ID Card. Present your ID card at any number of local businesses to receive a dis-count. John E. Blowers – Obituary

Berlin – John Elwin Blowers, 86, passed away peacefully following a short illness on Wednesday, August 16th, 2023.  Born on March 28th, 1937, he was the son of Elwin Blowers and Sarah Joebchen of Berlin, NY. John attended school in Berlin and was a life long resident of Berlin. John served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1954-1957. Returning to Berlin, he started his career as a carpenter with Lloyd and Dee Goodermote Builders and then joined the North Atlantic Carpenters Union where he worked on many projects throughout the capital region. John was married to Jane Bryant Blowers who passed in 1966. John was a member and past Commander of the Berlin American Legion Post. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, and camping. After retirement he and his long-time companion Jennie Ellsworth spent winters in DeLand, Florida until Jennie’s passing in 2020.   [Read more…] about John E. 37th Annual Run for the Roses 5K Results

Below are the results along with race finish times for the 37th annual Run for the Roses 5K, which took place Sunday, August 13th, at Grafton Lakes State Park. Well over 100 runners participated, with proceeds going to the Grafton Public Library.

District Welcomes New Additions

Brunswick-Brittonkill Central School District would like to welcome two new additions. First we welcome Todd Wojtal as our newly appointed Transportation Supervisor. Todd was formerly the Head Trainer with the Bethlehem Central School District where his responsibilities included recruiting, training, and compliance of all transportation employees. He is a 19A Certified Examiner (NYS-DMV) and is certified by the New York State Education Department as a School Bus Driver Instructor. He is also a member of the New York Association for Pupil Transportation and was awarded the NYAPT Employee of the year for the 2017–2018 school year.

County Legislature Approves Purchase of Former Dollar Tree

The plan to purchase the former Dollar Tree on Route 22 in Hoosick Falls was approved by the Rensselaer County Legislature at their Tuesday, August 8th meeting, with planning and construction work expected to begin in the coming weeks. The Dollar Tree closed earlier this year. The property, which was purchased for $575,000, includes the 8,000 square foot building and 80 parking spaces.

Hoosick Falls is one of five senior centers operated by the county, including Troy, Grafton, Schodack, and Rensselaer. With the county senior center in Troy opening this past April, and work set to begin in Hoosick Falls, the county will continue its efforts to find a new home for the county senior center in Rensselaer, which is located in rented space that is set to be developed for apartments in the coming months.

Raising Money for Suicide Prevention

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month (SPAM), a time dedicated to addressing a difficult topic and to raising awareness through promoting preventative measures and spotlighting mental health support. Heather's Heart Forge in Stephentown will host their Heartbreaker Competition, an annual forging competition hosted by the business's owners, farrier and bladesmith Steve Wayne and artist Heather Papoojian, and a mini Renaissance Faire to raise funds and awareness for SPAM. The Heather's Heart Forge sadly knows the pain of suicide following the death of a young apprentice. In the aftermath, Wayne and Papoojian have established the Thomas M. Wilson Scholarship to support young promising blade/black smiths.
