Students Donate Moon Jellyfish

For the last four years Mr. Matthew Christian’s Berlin High School (BHS) Marine Biology program has partnered with Via Aquarium in Rotterdam.  

BHS seniors Raymond Ericson, Elsie Corbett, and Samantha Rokjer, who took Mr. Christian’s class this year, once again were able to successfully raise moon jellyfish from polyps to embryos and finally to hatched moon jellies. The students then donated the over 100 moon jellyfish to the Via Aquarium.

Brain Fitness Foundation Unveils Facility

On Sunday, May 7th, The Brain Fitness Foundation unveiled its new facilities in Hoosick Falls with a soft launch event. Attendees were joined by the foundation’s leaders and staff for a luncheon followed by a presentation detailing the organization's mission to provide free, neuroscience-based mental health services to communities across New York State. 

The presentation was opened by Founder and Executive Director, Dr. Suzanne Falla, who highlighted the rise of mental health issues seen on a global scale since the COVID-19 pandemic.

New Lebanon Town Board Highlights

No bids were received for the new highway engine. The next step is for the town clerk to look into the state contracting website to see if there are any engines with state contract pricing, then contact the mechanic where the truck is to see if they can honor the state contract price. The is the second time it was put out to bid with no bids received.

After receiving two years of funding for the electricity used at the EV charging station, grant funding will run out on June 30th. The board has asked the CSC to research costs for charging so a fee schedule can be implemented.

Raymond C. Etman – Obituary

Raymond C (Bunky) Etman, 88, a lifelong resident of Grafton, New York died peacefully on Sunday, October 16, 2022 at his winter residence in Fort Pierce, Florida with his family at his side following a battle with cancer. Born in Grafton, New York on March 2, 1934, Mr. Etman was the son of Albert and Leona (Vars) Etman and for over 65 years, the husband of Dianne J. (Grandjean) Etman.

Mr. Etman attended the Berlin Central Schools and worked from the time he was a young teen. During his early years he worked on the family farm and was employed by several different construction companies prior to enlisting in the US Army during the Korean War. He served 2 years of active duty as a Private First Class and an additional 4 years in the Army Reserves. Following an honorable discharge, he was a truck driver for Rifenburg Construction, White Cross Diaper Service, and then Harrigan’s Laundry. He also served as Grafton Superintendent of Highways for 4 years. In 1975 he became a school bus driver for Brittonkill Central Schools and later for the Wynantskill Union Free School District before retiring in 2019 at the age of 85 and with over 44 years as a school bus driver. $45 Million Agreement Reached to Implement New Water Supply

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced an agreement that commits Saint-Gobain and Honeywell to implement the new water supply for the Hoosick Falls Village Water System, with an estimated cost of $10 million. The agreement also holds the companies accountable for $30 million in past costs incurred by state taxpayers. The companies remain responsible for determining the extent of site-related contamination from historic industrial operations, including on-site disposal of perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) at the McCaffrey Street facility.

HVCC Wins Two Awards of Excellence

Hudson Valley Community College (HVCC) recently received two prestigious World Federation of Colleges and Polytechnics (WFCP) Awards of Excellence at the organization’s annual World Congress. The WFCP awards program recognizes outstanding contributions from member institutions and associations in advancing professional and technical education and training for the global economy. The college earned a bronze award for Global Citizenship and a silver award for Strategic Leadership.

Body Recovered During Training Exercise

On May 11th, at approximately 8:10 pm, the Schaghticoke Fire Department recovered a body in the Hoosic River during a water training exercise. Deputies and investigators arrived on scene and it was determined that the body was that of David Fearnley, who had been reported as a missing person on November 24, 2022.

Hoosick Falls Board of Trustees

A resolution authorizing the agreement between the Village of Hoosick Falls and Saint-Gobain Performance Plastics Corporation and Honeywell International, Inc., was approved. For more information on the agreement, see our lead story on the front page.

The introduction of Local Law A of 2023, establishing a vacant and abandoned building registry, was discussed, as was the fee structure and non-compliance fees. A motion to set a public hearing for Local Law A of 2023 on Wednesday, June 14th, at 6 pm, was approved.

Fidelis Care is holding its Veggies To Go program, offering free locally grown vegetables to residents, on Thursday, May 18th, at Wood Park. It begins at 3 pm, and will run until quantities are gone.

East Nassau Board of Trustees Highlights

There is usually a period of adjustment when administrations change in village government, and East Nassau's village board meeting on May 10 was no exception. Long-time trustee Jeff Root conducted his first board meeting as mayor and clarified many questions ranging from financial to code enforcement issues. 

Presently Jeanine McCarthy, the village treasurer, has been completing the NYS Constitutional Tax Limit & Property tax limit filings, tax bills, and the comptroller's reports. All are in, but she will be waiting to see if any revisions need to be made within the next few weeks. She hopes to revise the tax write-up for the website.
