New Historical Marker Honors Civil War Service

Patricia Brazie Flint has dedicated the last decade to preserving and honoring the history of Stephentown through her work as the town’s historian. Earlier this year, Pat, a lifelong resident of Stephentown, was recognized for her tireless work by the Sons of the American Revolution with the Martha Washington Medal and Patriot Medal. Her dedication to Stephentown and telling its history is evident in the nine historical road markers the town has received while she has been its historian. The markers include: Brockway Cemetery, Denison Jones Cemetery, Garfield Cemetery, Presbyterian Cemetery, Patriot Burial Roadside Marker at Stephentown Baptist Cemetery, Stephentown Cemetery, Stephentown Heritage Center, and a Patriot Burial Roadside Marker at Carpenter Cemetery.

On May 14th, her ninth marker honoring the Civil War service of Benjamin Franklin Clark and his son Andrew Jackson Clark was erected at Braveheart Books & Bazaar, located at

Honoring Our Local Heroes

Rensselaer County has vowed to never forget the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families. That commitment continued recently with the monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran ceremony recognizing the life and service of brothers Frank and Carmen Ciccarelli.

Both Frank and Carmen were among the four Ciccarelli brothers who served in World War II. Carmen made the ultimate sacrifice, falling in combat in July 1944 during a heavy enemy counterattack during the invasion of Saipan.

SMITH 5K and Wellness Fair

The 8th Annual SMITH 5K and Berlin Middle/High School (BMHS) Wellness Fair Committee had beautiful weather on Saturday, May 18th. The morning was kicked off with 60 in-person runners and walkers taking part in the SMITH 5K.

SMITH 5K coordinator Mrs. Ariel Gilbert was able to add $2,180 to the Berlin SMITH Scholarship fund thanks to all the participants. The SMITH Scholarship will go to a graduating Berlin student who demonstrates the following qualities: Service-Merit-Integrity-Truth-Honor, in honor of Bob Smith, a Berlin Graduate.

Heads of Hope 5K

On Sunday, June 2nd, at 9 am, the inaugural Heads of Hope 5K run and walk will take place at Brunswick Central School District. The run is organized by Tamarac Senior Katie Gross, in collaboration with the Tamarac Booster Club, to benefit the American Brain Tumor Association.

Katie has directly felt the impact of brain cancer through the loss of her mother to the illness. This event is to celebrate the people in our community who have been affected by brain cancer and to remember the ones we have lost.

Memorial Day Parade Details

The Hoosick Post 40 American Legion is proud to announce that Hoosick Falls native Luis Weierbach has been named Grand Marshal of the 2024 Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27th.

Ceremonies will begin at 8 am at the flagpole in Wood Park. The American Legion will then offer Memorial Day rites, stepping off at 8:15 am from the corner of Main Street and Wilder Ave and march to the Shop Bridge to honor men of the Navy who lost their lives at sea. The Auxiliary will offer a prayer and throw a wreath, donated by McNeilly’s Florist, into the river in honor of their service. The Legion will fire a volley and Taps will be sounded by the school band. The Legion will then honor those lost in the Civil War at Monument Park, located at the junction of Classic and High Streets. The Auxiliary will offer a prayer, the Legion will fire a volley, and Taps will be played by the high school band. The legion will then assemble at the Veterans Memorial located in Wood Memorial Park, where wreaths will be placed honoring veterans of past and present wars. The Auxiliary will offer a prayer, and the final volley and Taps will occur after the parade.

Memorial Day Parade Details and Grand Marshal

The Hoosick Post 40 American Legion is proud to announce that Hoosick Falls native Luis Weierbach has been named Grand Marshal of the 2024 Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27th.

Luis Michael Weierback was born November 12th, 1995, in Mays Landing, NJ. He attended Hoosick Falls Central School and was a New York State Champion wrestler. He enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 2013, and subsequently received an appointment to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point upon graduating high school in 2014.

Dill Brook Community Forest Opens

On Saturday, May 11th, the Rensselaer Plateau Alliance (RPA) and Rensselaer Land Trust (RLT) staff, board, and volunteers celebrated the Grand Opening of the 128-acre Dill Brook Community Forest in Memory of Robert Simms.

This is the fourth community forest that RPA/RLT has conserved and opened for public access. All community forests are managed with the help of a team of volunteers, and anyone interested is welcome to be part of a community forest volunteer committee.

Orange Bucket Challenge Underway

The Orange Bucket Challenge runs through May 23rd. The Berlin Community Food Closet challenges the staff at BCSD to compete against each other to donate foods for the summer lunch program. The winning staff receives a free breakfast provided by Food Closet volunteers.

This year the staff will try to bring in the most canned fruit, fruit cups, juices, dried fruit, fruit snacks, etc., and gift certificates for grocery stores to purchase fresh fruit.
