Community Day

On Saturday, October 14th, the hamlet of North Chatham will be holding its third annual Community Day. All are invited to come to North Chatham and see what makes it a great place to live. The North Chatham Free Library will be open with books for sale on the front lawn, weather permitting, and some residents of the hamlet will be having yard sales. The North Chatham United Methodist Church clothing barn will be open and the church will have a sweet treats sale, silent auction, tailgate sale, donated items for sale, and lunch available. If you would like to donate items for the sale or sell your own items as part of the tailgate sale, please see the church website listed below. The Neighbors of Northern Columbia County will have an informational table at the church. The North Chatham Volunteer Fireman’s Association will have a truck at the church and kids can spray a fire hose. There will be games for kids on the church lawn and the Buccaneers 4-H club will be selling pumpkins. Free parking will be available behind the church. Robert Petersen – Obituary

On September 9th, 2023, Robert “Larry” Petersen of Hoosick Falls and most recently of Mercer Island, WA, passed away peacefully. He was born July 3rd, 1939 in Shelby, IN and preceded in death by his parents Fritz and Bernice “Sue” Petersen, and brother, Jim Petersen.

Larry graduated from Portage High School in Portage, IN and went on to David Lipscomb University in Nashville, TN on a basketball scholarship. After graduation he bought a home and taught at Taft Elementary School in Crown Point, IN. He then moved on to work for Union Carbide in East Chicago, IN. He transferred to the Union Carbide plant in Bennington, VT and moved into an old Victorian home in North Hoosick, NY. He opened Petersen’s Power Equipment selling and servicing camping trailers, lawnmowers, snowmobiles, and motorcycles. After closing his business Larry sold cars for multiple auto dealers in the area, including Haynes Ford in Hoosick Falls until his retirement. Man Faces Multiple Charges After Triple Stabbing

On September 16th, the State Police of Brunswick arrested Anthony I. Cresser, 26, of Brunswick, NY, for three counts of Attempted Murder in the First Degree, three counts of Assault in the first degree, Robbery in the first degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the third degree.

New Athletics Logo Revealed

The Berlin-New Lebanon (BNL) Athletic Department, in conjunction with the Merged Sports Committee (MSC), a committee composed of BNL student-athletes, parents, coaches, and both schools’ Athletic Directors, is proud to announce the completion of the new BNL Athletic sports logo and the introduction of new team colors. This process was student-led and driven with the Berlin and New Lebanon Athletic Departments and Merged Sports Committee (MSC) helping to craft the design based off of student responses.

Water Service Restored After Water Main Break

On September 18th, a 30” cast iron water main broke in Lansingburgh near 7th Ave and 124th St. The water main is one of the two major distribution lines flowing from the water treatment plant. As a major distribution line, impacts were felt beyond Lansingburgh. The Department of Public Utilities, Department of Public Works, Engineering, and other city departments responded to the break and had it repaired in roughly a day’s time.

A boil water advisory was still in effect, for those affected, as of the time of this writing. Any resident experiencing low water pressure or no water should contact the DPU at 518-237-0241.

Stephentown Town Board Highlights

The September 18th board meeting was brief but active. After the approval of paying the bills, which included slabs for the generators and three field trips for the Berlin Summer camp, the minutes from the August 21st meeting were approved. Then, the meeting minutes from the September 11th meeting were approved.

The new highway department truck will be discussed on October 9th. According to Supervisor Roder, the town's budget allotted $25,000 from the justice court but has only brought in approximately $10,000, which means the town is anticipating a deficit.

East Nassau Town Board Highlights

The September 13th meeting of the East Nassau board of trustees was jam-packed, including two village appointments.

After a two lot line adjustment on Route 66 was approved, the board approved the appointment of Ruth Whaley as Village Treasurer and Tax Collector. Whaley, a long-time Nassau resident who has been the bookkeeper for the Nassau Free Library, and has 20 years of accounts payable experience, will replace Jeanine McCarthy, who resigned effective September 1st. The board approved the purchase of a computer and mouse for Whaley to use.

Elaine G. Sprunger

Our dear mother and grandmother (Lois) Elaine Garrod Sprunger passed away at the age of 95 on September 14th, 2023. An only child born in 1928 to Arthur and Victoria Garrod of Philadelphia PA, Elaine was preceded in death by her husband Rev. Robert J. Sprunger in 1991, several first cousins, and many close friends. She is survived by her children Beth (Michael) Berkowitz and Paul (Katie) Sprunger, and by her five adored grandchildren: Abigail (Erin Kinney-Sprunger) Sprunger, Olivia Sprunger, Jared (Lana LaBarbera) Berkowitz, Kelsey Berkowitz, and Kyle (Kevin Vietmeier) Berkowitz. She is also survived by her close friends Diana and Roger Corbett, and by many others who knew and loved her.

Proud Philadelphia city girl Elaine met country boy and sailor Robert (Bob) John Sprunger and they married in June 1950. Elaine soon became a pastor’s wife and thrived in that role. She was always heavily involved in all the church’s activities, including too many fall bazaars, church dinners, and vacation Bible schools to count. Elaine had a wonderful soprano singing voice, and was always a key member of the church choir.
