Walter A. Wood Tractor and Agriculture Show Postponed

Due to poor weather, this year’s Walter A. Wood Tractor and Agriculture Show, originally scheduled for Saturday, October 7th, has been postponed until Saturday, October 14th. Join us for antique tractors, trucks, and farm equipment. There will be hay rides, pony rides, and a petting zoo for the kids, along with vendors, crafts, food, and exhibitors.

The Burton H. Luke Tractor Parade will begin at noon, from Wood Park, 24 Main St, and this year will start a new tradition, by having a grand marshal. Each year a local farmer will be chosen to be honored and lead the parade for their contributions to the agriculture community.

Phase One of Vision 2020 Complete

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC), a member of the Dartmouth Health system, has completed Phase One of the organization’s most ambitious building project in the last forty years.

A component of the Vision2020, A Decade of Transformation campaign, Phase One includes the opening of the new Kendall Emergency Department, the Richard and Pamela Ader Foundation Lobby, and Marro Café.

New York State Fair Selections

While 4-H Clubs keep busy throughout the year, it’s at the county and state fairs where they are the most visible to the public, showcasing the skills they’ve learned. Several Cornell Cooperative Extension Rensselaer County 4-H members had their outstanding projects that were entered at the 2023 Schaghticoke Fair selected for the 2024 New York State Fair. Berlin Food Closet Preps for Busy Season

Traditionally fall is a busy time for the food closet and this year is no exception. Not only are new families using the food closet, the cost of food is constantly on the rise. The Berlin Community Food Closet serves the residents of Berlin and Stephentown, and is open the first and third Saturdays of each month from 9 to 11 am, or by appointment.

This summer more than 50 children were provided lunch supplies for eight weeks. Many thanks to local donors as well as Stewart’s and WGY.

Gilded Age Illustrated Lecture

On Thursday, October 26th, at 7:30 pm, at the Pittstown Town Hall, 97 Tomhannock Rd, Kathryn Sheehan will present an illustrated lecture on how Troy’s 19th century architecture became an integral backdrop to the Julian Fellows HBO series The Gilded Age. Sheehan worked with the location scouts and production designer on locations throughout the city, and will share some of the behind-the-scenes stories that happened during the filming of season one. Sheehan is the newly appointed Executive Director of the Hart Cluett Museum, and the Historian for Rensselaer County and the City of Troy. The lecture is hosted by the Pittstown Historical Society.

Community Day

On Saturday, October 14th, the hamlet of North Chatham will be holding its third annual Community Day. All are invited to come to North Chatham and see what makes it a great place to live. The North Chatham Free Library will be open with books for sale on the front lawn, weather permitting, and some residents of the hamlet will be having yard sales. The North Chatham United Methodist Church clothing barn will be open and the church will have a sweet treats sale, silent auction, tailgate sale, donated items for sale, and lunch available. If you would like to donate items for the sale or sell your own items as part of the tailgate sale, please see the church website listed below. The Neighbors of Northern Columbia County will have an informational table at the church. The North Chatham Volunteer Fireman’s Association will have a truck at the church and kids can spray a fire hose. There will be games for kids on the church lawn and the Buccaneers 4-H club will be selling pumpkins. Free parking will be available behind the church. Annual Emergency Services Memorial

On Sunday, October 1st, Rensselaer County came together to remember the work and service of first responders who passed away during the previous year at the annual Emergency Services Memorial.

The Memorial Service recognized 73 fire, police, and ambulance members, whose names will be added to the county memorial at the Public Safety complex in Troy.

Vietnam Veteran Statue Unveiled

Capping off a day filled with Wreaths Across America Mobile Education Exhibit veterans events, members of the Stephentown Veterans joined the Director and Trustees of The Stephentown Memorial Library (SML) at the library at 7 pm on Thursday, September 21st to unveil a statue of a wounded Vietnam veteran available to view at the library on an ongoing basis.

President of SML’s Board of Trustees Jennifer Peabody kicked off the unveiling, welcoming all assembled to the library. Jen spoke of what a wonderful opportunity it is for the library to greet and support members of Stephentown Veterans as well as other town organizations at events like this, strengthening and reinforcing our community bonds. She reminded those gathered that SML’s mission has always included the honoring of Stephentown’s active military and veterans.
