SMITH 5K and Wellness Day

On April 29th, the Berlin Middle/High School (BMHS) held its 7th Annual SMITH 5K/1 Mile Fun Run and Family Fun/Wellness Day. This community event is a special day not only for the way in which it brings our community together, but also for how it supports a wonderful local scholarship.

The SMITH Scholarship goes to a graduating senior who demonstrates the outstanding qualities of Service-Merit-Integrity-Truth-Honor.

Annual Trout Release

On Wednesday, April 26th, Berlin High School students released brown trout they raised this school year into the Little Hoosic River.

This annual event is the culmination of BHS Science teacher Mr. Toole’s Trout in the Classroom project where students raise the brown trout from embryo, to alevin, and finally to fingerling before releasing the trout to fully develop into adults.

FFA Members Attend Leadership Conference

Recently, six members from the Hoosick Falls FFA Chapter attended the annual NYS FFA Member Leadership Series (MLS) Conference in Syracuse. This conference is held to empower agriculture education students with knowledge and skills that they need to be confident and capable leaders.

FFA members Jessica Haynes, Amber Bulson, Cole Ziehm, Luke Hoag, Karson Holbrook, and Lucias Gaillard learned about the importance of leadership, how to build trust with others, and how FFA helps develop those skills that can be used to improve their chapter, school, and community.

County Announces Bus Safety Program

Rensselaer County has announced a new school bus safety program in partnership with BusPatrol that will enable school buses to utilize automated enforcement solutions to enhance student safety. As part of the county program, school districts that participate will be able to equip their entire school bus fleet with BusPatrol stop-arm photo enforcement technology to capture the license plates of motorists who illegally pass stopped school buses that put children in danger as they get on and off the bus.

So far, Hoosic Valley Central, Hoosick Falls Central, Schodack Central, Berlin Central, Averill Park Central, Brunswick (Brittonkill) Central, East Greenbush Central, and Wynantskill Union Free school districts have started installation. The school bus fleets at each district, totaling more than 400 buses, will be outfitted with modern safety technology.

High School Bowling Sectionals

On Thursday, February 9th, and Monday, February 13th, the Hoosick Falls bowling team traveled to Boulevard Bowl in Schenectady for this year’s Section 2 Bowling Tournament. Bowling as individuals in the Girls’ Tournament, senior Jordyn Wilwol 204-538-1065 and freshman Hailey Bedford 257-546-1030 each received recognition for their bowling. Hailey’s 257 was the top game in Class C, while Jordyn’s 204 was the second highest.

Powers Claims Runner-Up

At Inaugural NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational

Tallulah Powers was runner-up at 165 pounds in the inaugural NYSPHSAA Girls Wrestling Invitational held at Onondaga Community College. She was one of only three finalists from Section 2, and the only Runner Up. The meeting of 204 of the State’s top female wrestlers is the first of its kind in New York State. Just this year New York sanctioned Girls Wrestling giving it an Emerging Sport status. Powers was selected as Section 2’s top entry at the 165 pound class and was seeded first in her 16 girl bracket.
