Don’t Trash It, Smash It

After Halloween, don’t let your pumpkins go to waste! Bring them to Knickerbacker Park, 191 103rd Street, between 10 am and 1 pm on Saturday, November 2nd for a fun-filled day of smashing, smushing, and recycling. Not only will this event offer a great way to dispose of your pumpkins in an eco-friendly way, but it will also be packed with activities for the whole family. Rensselaer County and the City of Troy have partnered together to host this new event that will be both fun and educational.

World-Renowned Poet Visits HVCC

Joy Harjo, an award-winning poet and author who served three terms as the U.S. Poet Laureate, will visit Hudson Valley Community College on Wednesday, November 6th, for an event to commemorate National Native American Heritage Month. The 11 am talk in the BTC Auditorium on the Troy campus will include Q&A and a book signing. The event is free and open to the public.

$16.7 Million Maintenance Facility Opening

Work on Field Maintenance Shop 17 began in March of 2023 and the project was finished in late August of this year.

The project was budgeted to cost $17 million and the new facility was expected to be ready by May of 2025. But the prime contractors of Bette & Cring, Flex Electric, and Crisifulli Brothers brought the project to competition much sooner for about $300,000 less.

Hasselwander Sentenced in Death of Morgan Bates

Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly recently announced that Ian J. Hasselwander, 24, of Petersburgh was sentenced to 25 years to life on one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A-I Felony and 15 years to life with 5 years post release supervision on one count of Strangulation in the First Degree, a Class C Violent Felony.

Hasselwander was arrested by the Rensselear County Sheriff’s Department on March 4th, 2022 in connection with the investigation into the disappearance and death of Morgan Bates.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event

Rensselaer County, the City of Troy, and the Town of Bethlehem are partnering on an inter-county Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal program for 2024. The program consists of four events providing residents of the participating municipalities the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through normal garbage collection service.

Literacy Volunteers Awarded $10,000

Literacy Volunteers of Rensselaer County (LVORC) has been awarded $10,000 by The McCarthy Charities, Inc., a private foundation based in Troy. The grant will help LVORC with operating expenses and enable LVORC’s professional staff in Troy to administer literacy programs and services that are offered at no cost to adult learners in Rensselaer County.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event

Rensselaer County, the City of Troy, and the Town of Bethlehem are partnering on an inter-county Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal program for 2024. The program consists of four events providing residents of the participating municipalities the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through normal garbage collection service.

The next event will be Saturday, September 14th at the Town of Brunswick Town Hall, 336 Town Office Road. Entrance to the event will be on Town Office Road.

New State License Procedures

Beginning this year with the 2024-2025 season, people will be introduced to the state’s new process of printing sporting licenses for fishing, hunting, and trapping. HVCC Freezes Tuition for Second Consecutive Year

Hudson Valley Community College has held tuition stable for a second consecutive year making the college one of the most affordable higher education options in the state. Full-time students who are New York State residents will pay $2,528 per semester, plus fees. Part-time resident students will pay $211 per credit hour. The Rensselaer County Legislature recently approved the college's $106,105,178 budget.
