Stephentown Town Board Highlights

The September 16th Stephentown Town Board meeting went smoothly and was brief but full of good things happening throughout the community.

The board approved the claims audit, and in the August 19th, 2024 minutes, the town clerk and the justice court were reported without any significant discussion. The transfer station report was tabled until next month.

Air National Guardsman Wins National Award

New York Air National Guard Chief Master Sgt. Greg Mihalko, a Stephentown resident, has been named the Air National Guard's recipient of the Lance P. Sijan Leadership Award for 2024.

The award recognizes Airmen who have demonstrated the highest quality of leadership in their jobs and lives.

The award, created in 1981, takes its name from Capt. Lance P. Sijan, a pilot shot down over Vietnam in November 1967 who evaded capture for six weeks. Sijan died in captivity and was awarded the Medal of Honor Posthumously.

Stephentown End-of-Summer BBQ Bash

On Saturday, September 14th, from 4:30 to 7:30 pm, at the Stephentown Federated Church, 1513 Garfield Rd, you are cordially invited to join your church family and many friends and neighbors for fellowship and a delicious pork and turkey BBQ with all the fixin’s, including baked beans, coleslaw, corn-on-the-cob, and watermelon. If the weather is nice, we might eat outside. The cost is a goodwill offering, and proceeds will go towards our Manse siding project. The dinner is hosted by the Community Breakfast Group and the Sonshiners Group of the Stephentown Federated Church.

Stephentown Town Board Highlights

A discussion on solar power within the Stephentown community was a significant topic during the August 19th board meeting.

Presenters from Labella Associates and Longroad Solar presented an 18-page decommissioning plan for a five-megawatt community solar farm on 77 acres on NY Route 22 that has been two and a half years in design. The decommissioning plan would need to be approved by the board to move forward, and this was the first presentation that allowed them to provide feedback on the plan.

Car Show and Swap Meet

The SVFD Car Show and Swap Meet is happening on Sunday, August 18th, from 9 am to 3 pm. Cruise on over to the Stephentown Fire Hall, 35 Grange Hall Road, to check out the freshly detailed and buffed to the nines vehicles.

There will be antique autos, classic cars, antique tractors, hot rods, and antique fire trucks. There will also be food, vendors, and raffles. There is something for everyone to enjoy.

Hasselwander Found Guilty

Ian J. Hasselwander, 24, of Petersburgh has been found guilty after a jury trial on one count of Murder in the Second Degree, a Class A-I Felony and one count of Strangulation in the First Degree, a Class C Violent Felony.

Hasselwander was arrested by the Rensselear County Sheriff’s Department on March 4th, 2022 in connection with the investigation into the disappearance and death of Morgan Bates. The investigation began as a missing person complaint on Tuesday, February 22, 2022 and turned into a suspicious death investigation when Morgan’s body was located in

Stephentown Town Board Highlights

The July 15th Stephentown board meeting was brief but busy. After the audit of claims and approval of the minutes, the transfer station reported depositing $7,532 for June. According to the transfer station report, appliances and electronics will no longer be charged for this service due to a change in e-waste online registration. The town's clean-up day was quite successful, but the final numbers will be reported at the next meeting. Supervisor Roder described the clean-up day as an advantage for the community that is money well spent.

Nathaniel D. Moss – Obituary

Stephentown – Nathaniel D. Moss, 24, of Newton Road passed away on Wednesday, July 17th, 2024 at the Berkshire Medical Center from injuries sustained in a motorcycle accident on Sunday, July 14th on Lebanon Mountain. Born on April 17th, 2000 in Pittsfield, Nate was the son of Amy Moss Goodermote and for the past 18 years the “son” of Steve Goodermote of Stephentown. Nate was a lifelong resident of the Valley and was educated in the Stephentown and Berlin Schools. Nate worked side by side with Steve in the Steve Goodermote Contracting Company with the plan to take over the business in the future.
