Honoring a Local Hero

On Monday, April 8th, veterans, residents, family, and friends joined with elected officials to remember the life and service of the late Thomas William "Bill" Killian at the monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran ceremony.

Bill served with the U.S. Navy during the Cold War for twenty years from the 1950s through 1971. He worked as a shipfitter, helping with the crucial job of repairing ships and returning them to active front-line duty.

Paint Recycling Event in Troy

There will be a paint recycling event on Saturday, April 6th, from 9 am to 1 pm at Hudson Valley Community College. The event is open to all Rensselaer County residents. Registration is required, and you can register by visiting circular.eco/event/rensselaer-paint-recycling-event. Paint must be in its original labeled container; no cracked or leaking containers will be accepted. Accepted materials include urethanes, oil and latex-based paints, acrylic paint, varnishes, shellacs, lacquers, primers, and clear coating. Items that won’t be accepted include spray, marine, and auto paints, household hazardous waste, electronics,

McLaughlin Delivers State of the County Address

On Tuesday, March 12th, Rensselaer County Executive Steve McLaughlin delivered his annual State of the County (SOTC) address for 2024, in the legislative chambers at 99 Troy Road in East Greenbush. McLaughlin began by leading legislators in a moment of silence for Casey Frankoski, who was killed last week in a helicopter crash while patrolling the Texas-Mexico border with the National Guard.

Electronics Recycling Event

On Saturday, March 23rd, from 9:30 am to 1 pm, at the Rensselaer County East Greenbush Office Building, 99 Troy Road, the Rensselaer County Legislature and Environmental Management Council will sponsor an electronics recycling event. The event will be held in the parking lot. Accepted items include, but are not limited to, audio/visual, cell phones, printers, copiers, video game systems, wiring, and cables. Items not accepted include, but are not limited to, dishwashers, refrigerators, cleaning products, paint, tires, and fluorescent lamps and lightbulbs. For more information, please call ProTea recycling at 518-874-1001.

County Mourns Loss of Resident

Rensselaer County is mourning the loss of a county resident killed in a helicopter crash in Texas on Friday, March 8th, while serving with the National Guard.

Family members have confirmed the death of Casey Frankoski, a graduate of Columbia High School, who was serving with the National Guard.

Local Man Facing Drug Charges

A Troy man is facing drug charges following a year-long investigation by the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office. Michael Peabody, 55, is being charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st degree, three counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd degree, one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th degree.
