Petersburgh Town Board Highlights

As always, the Petersburgh Town Board was hard at work on August 19th, covering a variety of issues, from maintenance to safety.

During the department reports, after approving the minutes from July's meeting, the Water District reported that fuses were replaced in the re-circulation system after the storms. Construction is underway at the pump house and should be operational by November. New Knox boxes have been installed at each town building to assist the fire department in case of an emergency. The air conditioners in the Memorial Hall and clerk's office have been serviced.

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event

Household Hazardous Waste Disposal Event

Rensselaer County, the City of Troy, and the Town of Bethlehem are partnering on an inter-county Household Hazardous Waste (HHW) disposal program for 2024. The program consists of four events providing residents of the participating municipalities the opportunity to safely dispose of hazardous materials not accepted through normal garbage collection service.

The next event will be Saturday, September 14th at the Town of Brunswick Town Hall, 336 Town Office Road. Entrance to the event will be on Town Office Road.

Beyond Plastics Course Educates Residents

These are the reportings from an interview with three people who took the Beyond Plastics course via Zoom this spring. Two of these individuals are Climate Smart volunteers from the Village of East Nassau, Lydia Davis and Judith Rusch. The third is a concerned citizen from Stephentown, Janet Ivory. The course consisted of seven two-hour classes taught by Judith Enck, a long-time environmental activist and head of Beyond Plastics, an organization based in Bennington, Vermont. The first hour of each class presented different topics concerning plastics and pollution. The second hour was open to questions.

Library Receives McCarthy Charities Grant

On August 7th, the Grafton Community Library Board of Trustees announced that the library received a McCarthy Charities Grant for $12,000. The McCarthy Charities group is a private family foundation whose goal is improving the quality of life of Rensselaer County residents.

The grant funds will be used for the installation of a new generator, which will allow the library to continue providing services through power outages due to harsh weather. In addition to regular library operations, the generator will allow patrons to access running water, charge their phones, find warmth in the winter and cooling in the summer, and utilize the kitchen facilities during weather emergencies.

Karen McGovern Volleyball Tournament

The 25th annual Karen McGovern Volleyball Tournament will take place on Saturday, September 7th. We invite you to join us at The Sandbar to cheer on volleyball teams and participate in our ever-popular auction and raffles. Auction items will be on display, and ticket sales will be available from noon to 2 pm. All funds raised will benefit the Karen and Molly McGovern Fund.

Each year, community members are selected for honors as we kick off the event at 10 am. This year, Tri State Credit Union will be recognized for their continued commitment to the Karen and Molly McGovern Fund. Additionally, we will honor a remarkable one-year-old, Willow Grace Pellerin, along with her brother Colton and parents Matthew and Cala. Together, they embody the wonderful traits exemplified by Karen McGovern as she courageously fought her battle against cancer.

East Nassau Board of Trustees Highlights

The August 14th meeting of the East Nassau Board of Trustees was busy. It discussed a recurring problem in the village: speeding on Tayer Road.

After approving the treasurer's report and the July minutes, a discussion about a speeding problem on Tayer Road occurred. A resident attended the meeting and requested that the village consider placing speed bumps on the road because speeding has become frequent and dangerous.

Run for the Roses 5K Results

The 38th annual Run for the Roses 5K was held at Grafton Lakes State Park on Sunday, August 11th.

The 5K race course, sanctioned by USATF, follows the park entrance road, continues along Route 2, around the Town Park, and back into the park on Long Pond Road. Proceeds benefit the Grafton Community Library. The following are the results for both the men’s and women’s overall first place finishers, and the winners by age group and their respective times.

HACA Food Pantry Use Up 22%

Food pantries nationwide are struggling to keep up with the increased demand on top of increased food costs. The HACA Food Pantry has provided 20,459 nutritious meals to 2,271 individuals through July of this year. A three-day supply of food for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, including staples, produce, frozen, dairy, and bakery goods is provided. We also provide life-essential non-food items such as diapers, toiletries, personal care items, and paper products. The month of July alone saw the greatest number of families served since 2015.
