George Daniel Scott Jr. – Obituary

George Daniel Scott Jr, known as “Dan,” passed away at home surrounded by family and friends on May 17th, 2024, in Mesa, AZ (formerly of Hoosick Falls, NY), after a battle with cancer and dementia.

Dan was born to Leona (Dupree) & George Daniel Scott Sr. in Troy, NY on January 17th, 1949.

Dan had many hobbies including running marathons and triathlons; he was a skydiver with over 200 jumps, his latest being March 9th, 2024. He loved fishing; his favorite was fly fishing in Rocky Mt National Park. He was also an avid Ohio State Buckeye fan. Dan served as a Gunners mate in the US Navy. History and Heritage Fair

The second annual Hoosick History and Heritage Fair took place on Saturday, May18th at the Hoosick Falls Armory. This free event created an opportunity for a variety of local historical societies, sites, museums, and organizations to share exhibits with the local community. Exhibits at the armory invited attendees to walk through history while learning about various artifacts. This year’s event included guest speakers and live music as well as a nonfiction book swap and chicken barbecue.

New Fence at Maple Grove Cemetery

The new fence at Maple Grove Cemetery was graciously donated and installed by Legacy Fence of Cambridge. The board of the cemetery is so grateful for this donation. Matt Davis, owner of Legacy Fence, shared that he and his father volunteer at a cemetery in Cambridge and he understands the struggles cemeteries have maintaining the upkeep, many of which are over a century old.

Memorial Day Parade Details

The Hoosick Post 40 American Legion is proud to announce that Hoosick Falls native Luis Weierbach has been named Grand Marshal of the 2024 Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27th.

Ceremonies will begin at 8 am at the flagpole in Wood Park. The American Legion will then offer Memorial Day rites, stepping off at 8:15 am from the corner of Main Street and Wilder Ave and march to the Shop Bridge to honor men of the Navy who lost their lives at sea. The Auxiliary will offer a prayer and throw a wreath, donated by McNeilly’s Florist, into the river in honor of their service. The Legion will fire a volley and Taps will be sounded by the school band. The Legion will then honor those lost in the Civil War at Monument Park, located at the junction of Classic and High Streets. The Auxiliary will offer a prayer, the Legion will fire a volley, and Taps will be played by the high school band. The legion will then assemble at the Veterans Memorial located in Wood Memorial Park, where wreaths will be placed honoring veterans of past and present wars. The Auxiliary will offer a prayer, and the final volley and Taps will occur after the parade.

Memorial Day Parade Details and Grand Marshal

The Hoosick Post 40 American Legion is proud to announce that Hoosick Falls native Luis Weierbach has been named Grand Marshal of the 2024 Memorial Day Parade on Monday, May 27th.

Luis Michael Weierback was born November 12th, 1995, in Mays Landing, NJ. He attended Hoosick Falls Central School and was a New York State Champion wrestler. He enlisted in the New York Army National Guard in 2013, and subsequently received an appointment to attend the United States Military Academy at West Point upon graduating high school in 2014.

History and Heritage Fair

The Hoosick History and Heritage Fair is back for its 2nd year. This popular event, sponsored by the Friends of the Bennington Battlefield and the Hoosick Township Historical Society, will be held on May 18th, from 10 am to 3 pm at the Hoosick Falls Armory on Church St. Get immersed in our local history and learn about the many interesting historic sites and museums in our locality as well as the activities presented by local historical organizations.

Job and Trade Fair

Hoosick Falls Community Alliance Church is excited to announce that we will be sponsoring our second Job & Trade Fair, this year with the help of Hoosick Falls Central School students. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 23rd, from noon to 3 pm, at the Hoosick Falls Armory, 80 Church Street.

With a few weeks still to go, many businesses have already registered or shown interest in attending. If you are looking for a job, would like to boost your job skills, or learn a trade, stop in and check out all that our vendors have to offer. Refreshments will also be available, along with lots of smiles and assistance wherever you might need it.

Marie O’Meara Galvin – Obituary

Marie O’Meara Galvin, 104, died Tuesday, March 12th, 2024, at St. Peter’s Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Hoosick Falls on March 23rd, 1919, to the late Philip and Mary O’Meara. She moved to Albany in 1959.

Marie earned a Master of Education from the New York State College for Teachers. She began her teaching career at Hoosick Falls High School. In 1948, she left teaching for a time to raise her children but returned in the mid-1960’s to teach at the Manpower Adult Education Center and then the Adult Learning Center. New Permanent Water Source Construction Begins This Spring

On Tuesday, March 19th, Governor Kathy Hochul announced construction is starting this spring on a permanent water transmission line to provide a new water source for the Village of Hoosick Falls. The project is part of a 2023 agreement between New York State and Saint-Gobain and Honeywell to implement the new water supply and address perfluorooctanoic acid (PFOA) contamination from historic industrial operations at the McCaffrey Street facility and other sites in the village.

Emmajane B. Cottrell – Obituary

Hoosick Falls – Emmajane B. Cottrell died on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024; she was 101. She was born July 24th, 1922 to Howard and Lucy Babcock of Grafton, NY, where she was raised with her two older siblings, Raymond and Esther. In October 1944 she married Sherman Cottrell and relocated to his family dairy farm in Hoosick Falls. Emmajane was a wonderful wife, loving mother, and impeccable homemaker. She loved to cook and took pride in keeping her home and yard neat and organized. Emmajane’s best friend was her sister Esther (Tilley) and the two families were inseparable as the kids grew up in the 60’s and 70’s.
