Fred E. Horton Jr. – Obituary

Delmar – Fred Ernest Horton Jr. passed suddenly from this life on May 22nd, 2023.

Born in Troy June 15th, 1943 to the late Fred Ernest Horton Sr. and Peggy (Stewart), he was a resident of Delmar and a member of the Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Wild Edibles

Grafton Historical Society 

On Wednesday, May 17th, at 7 pm, at Grafton Town Hall, the Grafton Historical Society will sponsor its May program, wild edibles. 

Janis Fallon, an environmental attorney, engineer, herbalist, and a Rensselaer County Master Gardener trainee will talk about foraging in our yards and the areas around us for wild plants that are not only good as food, but also wonderful for health and wellness. There will be recipes and samples to try. This program is free and open to the public. Light refreshments will be provided. The building is handicapped accessible.

Annual Trout Release

On Wednesday, April 26th, Berlin High School students released brown trout they raised this school year into the Little Hoosic River.

This annual event is the culmination of BHS Science teacher Mr. Toole’s Trout in the Classroom project where students raise the brown trout from embryo, to alevin, and finally to fingerling before releasing the trout to fully develop into adults.

National Honor Society Induction

This year’s National Honor Society (NHS) induction ceremony opened with Berlin High School (BHS) junior Jacob Collen leading the flag salute.

Ms. Karen Day, advisor of the Berlin CSD’s Taconic Valley Chapter of the National Honor Society, started by stating the objective of the NHS chapter. “This chapter shall be to create an enthusiasm for scholarship, to promote working leadership, to stimulate a desire to offer service, and to encourage the development of character in students of the Berlin Central School District,” said Ms. Day.

Grafton Town Board Highlights

The Youth Director job for the Summer Youth Program remains vacant. The board expressed their desire to keep the Grafton Summer Youth Program going, and discussed several possibilities as to how they could continue to search for a director. Ideas included a student returning home for the summer, or advertising in places such as indeed.com. Applicants would need to be 21 or over, work well with children, and be adequate at organizing programs.

Hilldale Farm Foundation Scholarship

The Hilldale Farm Foundation is accepting scholarship applications from Rensselaer County students seeking higher education in agriculture and related trades. Applicants should be graduating high school seniors who have resided in Rensselaer County for the last two years, and have been accepted to a college, university, vocational, or trade school in New York State. Suitable majors and trade programs include, but are not limited to, agriculture, horticulture, pre-veterinary studies, food science, welding, diesel mechanics, etc.

2023 Trout Day Announced

Grafton Lakes State Park (GLSP) is hosting its annual Trout Day. The event will be held during school Spring Break on April 11th, from 10 am to 12:30 pm. As the weather gets warmer, it is the perfect time to stock Long Pond and Second Pond with trout. The Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will be providing trout, and Grafton will be providing activities.

Come on your own or bring out the whole family; Trout Day is the perfect event for all ages. Enjoy trout shaped treats, crafts, and educational booths highlighting the wonders of trout. Learn about their habitats, fly tying, and macro invertebrates.

David M. Hunt – Obituaries

Grafton – David M. Hunt, of Jay Hakes Road, passed away from cancer on Friday, March 24, 2023 at the age of 63, after a period of declining health.

Born in Framingham, MA and raised in Ashland, MA, he was the son of David E. Hunt and Claire S. (Bonvini) Hunt. He attended Cornell University in NY and later received his Ph.D in Botany from the University of Georgia. His focus was aimed specifically at oak trees, when he saw early in his studies down in Florida the rapid decline of a specific species of oak, the Florida Scrub Oak (Quercus inopina). Super Troopers Place 2nd in Video Contest

Congratulations to Berlin Middle/High School (BMHS) Super Troopers. The Rural Schools Association recently announced their 2022-23 Student Video Contest Winners and the Super Troopers 2022/23 Empathy video received second place. The Super Troopers have been awarded $100 from the Rural Association for their second place win. 

Super Troopers has been a character education group at Berlin Central School District since 2011, and was started by a scrappy group of students who wanted to spread some positivity around the school. Their ideas of positivity, mixed with some humor, have been a hallmark of this group. The mantra of having fun without making fun has led this group to make over 50 different videos on various themes, both somewhat serious and not so serious.
