Janet M. Betit – Obituary

Hoosick Falls – Janet M. Betit, 91, passed away on Tuesday, November 28th at the Center for Nursing & Rehabilitation in Hoosick Falls. Janet was born on February 15th, 1932, in Bennington, VT, the daughter of the late Smith and Alice (Pinkham) Brown.

Janet attended school in Hoosick Falls. She was employed as a Home Health Aide with the Visiting Nurses Home Care in Albany, NY. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Hoosick Falls, where she was active with several of the clubs. Janet enjoyed walking and crocheting. 76th Turkey Trot Raises $20,000

On a day set aside for Capital Region families to gather and give thanks, 6,641 participants from 33 states and six nations descended upon the Collar City for the 76th running of the Troy Turkey Trot, America’s 12th oldest road race.

The event, presented by Pioneer, began at 8 am, with the Capital Region’s only Thanksgiving Day 10K. Tackling the traditional out and back course were more than 1,200 participants, many of whom run competitively for local track and field clubs. James Withers of Utica, NY outpaced his rivals to win the title in 30:31 and earned a $300 first place prize in the process. The first female across the line was Karen Bertasso Hughes of Selkirk, NY, who also earned a $300 payday with a winning time of 36:15.

Unity House Launches Children’s Holiday Program

 On Monday, November 27th, Unity House launched its annual Children’s Holiday Program, and highlighted the ways families can benefit from the generosity of community members who support the program through donations of cash and gifts. At the Unity House Holiday Store, parents can select gifts, at no cost, to suit their own children’s interests and needs.

The event featured Constant Louis, a stepfather whose children received gifts through the program in 2022, and Cassie Prugh, a longtime individual donor who this year will adopt 35 children by purchasing gifts for them. Both individuals talked about the importance of the program in helping children have a joyful holiday.

Stephentown Town Board Highlights

The November 20th town board meeting was active with the impending Thanksgiving holiday.

After a moment of silence in honor of Councilman Everett Madden, the auditing of claims, the minutes from the town board meetings, and the October 23rd budget workshop meeting were approved. The town board special meeting adopting the 2024 town budget was also approved. The board approved two public hearing minutes from October 30th about Proposed Local Law #3, the Real Property Tax Law for Volunteer Firefighters and Ambulance Workers, and the 2024 Preliminary Budget.

The library reported that their teen and children's program numbers have been up. The Halloween party and story time numbers were strong, and the library has several great programs set up for December that are listed on their website.

Petersburgh Town Board Highlights

The November 20th Town Board meeting was exceptionally brief but did involve some essential resolutions for residents.

The supervisor reported that sexual harassment training for all town employees must be completed at the beginning of December. She also mentioned an issue with a check and that the town's account is under manual clearance until the issue is resolved. Before adopting the budget, the tax cap report had to be submitted to the comptroller. The supervisor said the report was accepted.

The building report noted a water leak in the town hall basement that had to be repaired, as well as a highway department furnace. The insulation project for the town hall has been completed. The hope is that it will help with the operational cost.

2023 4-H Lohnes Award Recipient

Kaylie Millar of West Sand Lake has been selected as the 2023 4-H Lohnes Award recipient.

As a well-rounded 4-H member, Kaylie has been involved in the Rensselaer County 4-H Program as a member of the Stablemates Club and teen representative to the countywide 4-H Program Development Committee, serving in a variety of leadership roles over the years. She is currently the Treasurer of the Stablemates Club, has spoken at the County Legislature on behalf of 4-H, and was a teen instructor at our Annual 4-H 3 Day Equine Clinic. In 2022 Kaylie earned the Champion English Rider award and was Reserve Champion for Showmanship and Western Riding at the 4-H Schaghticoke Fair Horse Show. Throughout Kaylie’s 4-H career, she has been a mainstay helping and participating in many 4-H horse events, countywide Ambassador-Council-Teens Committee, and excelling in 4-H Horse Communications from the regional to state levels.

Everett D. Madden – Obituary

Stephentown – It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Everett Daniel Madden, 81, who passed in the comfort of his home on November 19th, 2023 with his family, and wife of 42 years, Tammy, by his side. Everett was born May 9th, 1942 to Lawrence & Betsey (Swarthout) Madden.

A lifelong resident and current Town Councilman of Stephentown, Everett grew up on the family farm that his grandparents established on Madden Road. After graduating from Berlin Central School in 1960, Everett worked at Fuller Brush Company and sold encyclopedias to put himself through college at State University College at Buffalo. After obtaining a bachelor’s degree in education, he taught industrial arts at Lansingburgh High School. In his younger years, Everett enjoyed operating ham radios and was a member of the Northern Berkshire Amateur Radio Club. He also flew with the North Adams Flying Club until 1977. Senior Center Volunteers Recognized

The services provided by the Rensselaer County Department for the Aging receive outstanding help from volunteers at our five senior centers and with delivery of meals and other support programs.

Volunteers were recently recognized with thanks and appreciation at both the county's senior center in Troy and senior center in Rensselaer. Department for the Aging's Deputy Commissioner Darcie Casey joined with Troy Center Director Lavena Futia and Rensselaer Center Director Gloria Fonda in commending volunteers for their help.
