Sylvia E. Leibensperger – Obituary

Sylvia Ellen (Pendleton) Leibensperger, 98, passed away on February 17th, 2024 in Johnston, RI. She was born on January 1st, 1926 on a farm in Hermon, ME, to Walter Pendleton and Iva (Miller) Pendleton. She graduated from Hermon Pond School, a one-room school house, in 1939, followed by Hermon High School in 1943, and the University of Maine, Orono in 1947. She worked as a teacher and counselor at the Bradley Home for Children in Riverside, RI and then as a Field Director for the Girl Scouts, first in Fall River, MA and then in Bergen County, NJ. In 1956 she married Howard Leibensperger, who was to be her beloved husband of 66 years. They raised their three daughters in Suffern and Monsey, NY. In 1977 Sylvia and Howard moved to Stephentown, NY, where Sylvia worked as the Librarian of the Stephentown Memorial Library, and where she and Howard were active in the Stephentown Historical Society. New Assessment Values

Town of Hoosick Assessor Tiffany McMahon has announced that change of assessment notices are now being mailed to all property owners within the town. Instructions will be included with each notice indicating the procedure for submitting an informal review and where to get additional information. Assessor McMahon reminds property owners to focus on the full market value estimate. If you do not agree with this estimate and can offer proof for a change, you can follow the process of submitting an informal review.

Brush Burning Prohibition Starts March 16th

New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) has announced that the annual statewide ban prohibiting residential brush burning begins March 16th and runs through May 14th. Since 2009, the DEC has enforced the annual brush burning ban to help prevent wildfires and protect communities during heightened conditions for wildfires.

St. Patrick’s Parade and Irish Festival

The Hoosick Falls St. Patrick’s Parade and Irish Festival is on Saturday, March 16th, less than three weeks away. Over 33 years ago, local Irishmen Mike Conway and TJ Carmody wanted to find a way to keep the Irish culture and history alive in the Hoosick area, and decided that a parade was the ticket.

Enter and join the fun of this year’s parade. Enter a float, antique cars, tractors, marchers, or bands. Showcase your business or civic organization. All fire, rescue, and law enforcement are welcome.

DMV Reopens at County Office Building

The Rensselaer County Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) located at the County Office Building in Troy has been reopened, and residents are invited to stop in, County Clerk Frank Merola and County Executive Steve McLaughlin announced.

The soft opening of the county DMV in Troy is underway this week, with a grand opening to be scheduled in the coming days. The DMV is now in an expanded and improved space on the first floor of the County Office Building at 1600 Seventh Avenue.

Petersburgh Town Board Highlights

The February 19th meeting of the Petersburgh Town Board was lengthy, full of business ranging from water issues to town appointments and town buildings.

After reviewing and approving the department reports, approximately $10,000 of budget intrafund transfers for the general fund, highway, and water district to finalize 2023 accounts were approved. During the discussion about ARPA funds, a $3,000 grant was explored to help offset the cost of three dry hydrants installed in the community. Initially, the hydrants were to be purchased using ARPA funds. Hydrants will be able to cut response time in emergencies. ARPA funds are being utilized in the town for various projects ranging from the town hall roof replacement to purchasing and installing new playground equipment.

Stephentown Town Board Highlights

The Stephentown Town Board conducted their business extremely efficiently this past week. After the audit of claims was reviewed and approved on February 19th, they approved the minutes from the January 15th meeting.

The town clerk turned over $561.50 to the Supervisor for January, and the distribution from the office of the State Comptroller and justice court fund distributed $132 to the town.

Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp

The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office is currently accepting applications for this year’s New York State Sheriffs’ Institute Summer Camp.

The Summer Camp is for boys and girls between the ages of 9 and 12 who, because of economic reasons, would not have an opportunity to attend a summer camp or enjoy a summer vacation. Campers must be up-to-date on immunizations and have received a medical physical after May 1st, 2023. This year’s camp session runs from Sunday, July 28th through Saturday, August 3rd.

Community Health Assessment

Southwestern Vermont Medical Center (SVMC) has launched a comprehensive health assessment of the communities it serves, seeking feedback through a short, anonymous survey, open to all.

SVMC is encouraging residents in Bennington and Windham Counties of Vermont, eastern Rensselaer and Washington Counties of New York, and northern Berkshire County in Massachusetts to take the brief survey, now available at SVMC.org. In addition to the digital survey, SVMC will be conducting in-person community outreach to collect responses.
