Art to End Gun Violence — Winner Announced

Rensselaer County District Attorney Mary Pat Donnelly in conjunction with the New York State Gun Involved Violence Elimination (GIVE) initiative held an art contest entitled Art to End Gun Violence for students at Lansingburgh and Troy high schools.

Students were asked to express their individual thoughts about how their communities are impacted by gun violence.

Burdett Birth Center to Continue Operations

The Burdett Birth Center at Samaritan Hospital in Troy will continue operations, with a special announcement recently made by a bi-partisan group of elected officials at the hospital.

Burdett Birth Center is the only birth center in Rensselaer County, and elected officials and community leaders had stated opposition to the closure. County Executive Steve McLaughlin was among the first to oppose the closure over a year ago.

Sidewalk Warriors Welcome New Van

Sidewalk Warriors provides help and hope to those experiencing hunger or homelessness in Troy and surrounding areas. Sidewalk Warriors came together recently to welcome a new van that will be a mobile lifeline for many during the coming months in a ribbon cutting organized by the Rensselaer County Regional Chamber of Commerce.

Geralyn M. Schmidt – Obituary

Troy – Geralyn M. Schmidt, 65, of 114th St. passed away on Sunday February 25th, 2024 at Albany Medical Center after a short illness.

Born in Pittsfield, MA, on November 1st, 1958. Geralyn was the daughter of the late Freddie and Loretta Beuhler Schmidt, who owned and operated the Wayside Inn in West Lebanon for many years.

Raised in West Lebanon, Geralyn was a graduate of New Lebanon High School. She worked for many years as a nurse’s aide and a home health aide before becoming an assistant manager of both Cumberland Farms in Castleton, and then the Hess station in New Lebanon.

Geralyn greatly loved animals and had many throughout her lifetime. Extra special places in her heart were her horse Kissle, dogs Penny and Cole, and her rooster BamBam.

Geralyn was predeceased by her loving companion James Montamerano.

Geralyn was a very loving, caring and generous person. She would give you the shirt off her back even if she didn’t have another one for herself. Her friendly smile and sweet disposition will be missed by all. [Read more…] about Geralyn M. Schmidt – Obituary

HVCC Becomes Part of UNESCO-UNEVOC

Congratulations to Hudson Valley Community College on becoming the first community college in the United States to become part of the UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for TVET. The UNESCO-UNEVOC International Centre for TVET includes 231 educational centers located in 150 countries across the globe. The program includes knowledge exchange, shared resources, peer learning, international collaboration, shared research, and combined resources to strengthen and support education.

Paint Recycling Event in Troy

There will be a paint recycling event on Saturday, April 6th, from 9 am to 1 pm at Hudson Valley Community College. The event is open to all Rensselaer County residents. Registration is required, and you can register by visiting circular.eco/event/rensselaer-paint-recycling-event. Paint must be in its original labeled container; no cracked or leaking containers will be accepted. Accepted materials include urethanes, oil and latex-based paints, acrylic paint, varnishes, shellacs, lacquers, primers, and clear coating. Items that won’t be accepted include spray, marine, and auto paints, household hazardous waste, electronics,

Local Man Facing Drug Charges

A Troy man is facing drug charges following a year-long investigation by the Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office. Michael Peabody, 55, is being charged with one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 1st degree, three counts of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 2nd degree, one count of Criminal Possession of a Controlled Substance 3rd degree, and one count of Criminal Possession of a Weapon 4th degree.

DMV Reopens at County Office Building

The Rensselaer County Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) located at the County Office Building in Troy has been reopened, and residents are invited to stop in, County Clerk Frank Merola and County Executive Steve McLaughlin announced.

The soft opening of the county DMV in Troy is underway this week, with a grand opening to be scheduled in the coming days. The DMV is now in an expanded and improved space on the first floor of the County Office Building at 1600 Seventh Avenue.

Free Income Tax Assistance at HVCC
