Wachoosik Park Ribbon Cutting

May 30, 2024 By Eastwick Press

Submitted by Town Supervisor David Fleming
The Town of Nassau has officially opened their fifth park with the recent ribbon cutting at Wachoosik Park (pronounced like Wah-CHOH-sik). The name means “at the little mountain” in Mohican, and was first proposed by Nassau Supervisor David Fleming in January 2022. The park name honors the town’s Mohican heritage and was one of the suggestions offered by the Mohican Tribe’s Language Program Team. The town had reached out to the tribe seeking an appropriate name to honor their history in the area.

A Lifetime of Service

September 28, 2022 By Eastwick Press

Courtesy of Rensselaer County
It was the early 1960s when 16-year-old Lawrence Cooper of Nassau decided to join his hometown fire department, and was welcomed, somewhat uneasily at first, by the older members of the Village fire unit.

That started a lifetime of service for Larry, who today is still an active member, responding to calls, protecting people and property, and guiding younger firefighters on training and technique. Saturday, September 24, colleagues, friends, and family joined with residents to thank Larry for his service.

East Nassau Board of Trustees Highlights

September 22, 2022 By Eastwick Press

by Denise Wright
The September 14 meeting of the East Nassau Board of Trustees ran a little long this month to make up for not having a meeting during August.

The meeting began with a continuation of the public hearing on a Laier Minor Subdivision. The application is for a 2-lot subdivision of approximately 16.36 acres. One lot will be 5.06 acres, and the other will be around 11.30 acres. According to the surveyor, there is no construction on either lot, and the stream will be the boundary. There was some discussion about if the property was in a flood plain, but it ultimately was decided that this was a straightforward subdivision. The Board approved being a lead agency of this unlisted action after reviewing the SEQRA process.
