Hoosick Falls

“Voices of the Fallen”

August 2, 2023 By Eastwick Press

On Saturday and Sunday, August 5th and 6th, the Friends of the Bennington Battlefield, in association with Bennington Community Theatre, will present “Voices of the Fallen” at the Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, Rt. 67. Three performances will be presented each day.

“Voices of the Fallen” is a theatrical and historical experience grounded in research. Historically dressed actors will bring to life people from both sides of the conflict who lost their lives at the Battle of Bennington, giving voice to those who did not live to tell their stories.

Hoosick Falls CSD Class of 1970 Picnic

Hoosick Falls Central School Class of 1970 will be holding a class picnic on Saturday, August 5th from noon to 7 pm at Grafton Lakes State Park. The Amphitheater Pavilion has been reserved for our gathering. Roberta A. Breese – Obituary

Roberta Ann Breese (Shaw), 86, passed away at home with her daughters by her side on July 20th, 2023. She was born on March 10th, 1937, in Hoosick Falls, NY. Roberta worked at several local businesses throughout her lifetime, but her most enjoyable love was being a teachers’ aid at Hoosick Falls Central School. She found great fulfillment in caring for and guiding young minds. Roberta was a member of Saint Luke’s in Cambridge, NY, and she and Bob spent many hours volunteering at Christ the King in Greenwich, NY. She found solace and strength in her faith. She was a member of the Town of Hoosick Rescue Squad, American Legion Auxiliary, Hoosick Falls Kiwanis, and in her earlier years a Girl Scout Cookie mom. How This Mental Health Organization Found a Home in Hoosick

Dr. Suzanne Falla of NYC Health and Hospitals was first struck by the mental health crisis when she noticed an alarming lack of mental health resources for the communities she served across Northern Manhattan and South Bronx. This realization prompted a response from the HHCNYC team committee at Lincoln Hospital South Bronx to unveil the nation’s first pediatric psychiatric emergency room. Shortly after, Dr. Falla extended her efforts to initiate school performance improvement support for school-aged children in Hunts Point South Bronx, where the high school graduation rate was a mere 5%.

Charlotte M. Humphrey – Obituary

Hoosick – Charlotte May Humphrey, 77, passed away on July 16th, 2023, after a long illness, and courageous battle with cancer, surrounded by her loved ones. She resided on Babcock Lake Road with her husband of fifty-eight years Floyd (Dick) Humphrey.

Charlotte was the eldest daughter of Harold and Jeanette (Lewis) Stevens. She was born on September 1st, 1945, in Hoosick Falls, NY. Charlotte retired from the Hoosick Falls Central School as a special ed teacher assistant after twenty-four years. She was an active member of the Pittstown Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School and enjoyed helping others. HACA Back-2-School Boost Program

For the 18th year, backpacks are being filled with age-appropriate school supplies for students in grades Pre-K through 6. Requests for backpacks have been rolling in to the pantry as post COVID-19 and inflation are resulting in more people seeking assistance both for food at the pantry and other necessities for their children. Thanks to the generosity of caring people such as yourself, backpacks, paper, markers, pens, glue, tissue, rulers, pencils, pencil boxes, and many other items are being gathered and sorted by volunteers.

Community Picnic and Family Fun Day

On Saturday, July 15th, from 10 am to 3 pm, at the Bennington Battlefield State Historic Site, Rt. 67, The Friends of the Bennington Battlefield and the Hoosick Township Historical Society invite you to bring your picnic baskets for a free community picnic and family fun day.

Grills and picnic tables will be readily available. There will be a food and ice cream truck as well. Eric Buddington and friends will provide period music and even teach some of the dances from long ago. There will be live demonstrations of an Edwardian Picnic, 18th century weaponry, kids activities, guided tours of the battlefield, and pit cooking.

We have also brought back the trolly, and will host three free scheduled, narrated trolley rides from the Battlefield to the Bennington Monument, where you will be able to spend some time and ride to the top of the monument at a reduced rate, before being brought back to the park. You will want to sign up for the trolley early. The first trip will start at 10:30 am.

Two Arrested in Larceny Investigation

Following up on a story we reported on last week, on Saturday, June 10th, the Hoosick Falls Police Department took over 20 reports of larceny from motor vehicles in multiple areas of the village. With the assistance of NYSP and NYSP BCI, two males were identified as suspects. On Sunday, June 18th, the Hoosick Falls Police Department arrested Joshua Richter, age 20, and Timothy Sparks, age 18, both of Bennington, VT, on three counts of Grand Larceny, seven counts of Trespassing, and five counts of Petit Larceny. Both suspects were processed and released on appearance tickets to appear in the Village of Hoosick Falls Court on Thursday, July 20th, at 6:30pm.

Performing Arts Council Award Ceremony

On the night of Tuesday, June 6th, the Music Department held its annual Performing Arts Council award ceremony. Dozens of students were honored for their performances throughout the year, including at All-County festivals, NYSSMA, and Albany Pro Musica. Drama Club students were also recognized for their hard work this year.

Kai Jones - Valedictorian, 98.71 GPA
Some of the awards Kai has received include: The Rensselaer County Conservation Alliance Scholarship, Young Women in Public Action, the Hugh O’Brien Youth Leadership Award, the 2022 Sage Student Award, the John Liporace Scholarship Finalist, and the George Eastman Youth Leaders Award.

Kai has been involved in many activities during her high school career, including National Honor Society, National Junior Honor Society, mentoring, soccer, softball, and ski club. Outside of school, she has participated in the Hoosick Falls Area Community Participation Work Group (CPWG), and Albany Japanese Language School.
