Berlin Town Board Highlights

February 15, 2023 By Eastwick Press

by Chris Tergliafera
The Department of Health didn’t approve the amended plans for the water tower project that would have removed the booster station on Plank Rd. Removal of the station would have saved the project roughly $297,000. Adding the station back in to the plans will put the project over budget. It’s currently unclear what can be adjusted or how to keep the project under budget.

The first responder tax exemption was approved via resolution. This would give volunteer firefighters and ambulance company members, as well as un-remarried spouses of volunteers who are killed in the line of duty, a 10% property tax reduction.

Troy – Edward A. Seagroatt, 81, died Wednesday, December 28, 2022 at Samaritan Hospital after a brief illness.

You may have driven with him in his prized 1934 Ford Cabriolet with the top down. You may have spotted him in town surprising someone with a bouquet of long-stemmed roses. Or he may have called you on your birthday, always remembering the date but too polite to mention the year.

Born in Troy, Ed was the son of the late Albert Seagroatt and Helen Brown Seagroatt. Ed was raised in Berlin, NY and resided in the Capital District area all his life. He attended Avon Old Farms School in Connecticut and was a graduate of La Salle Institute in Troy, NY. Catalog Card Quilt

October 12, 2022 By Eastwick Press

Written and Submitted by Alice Walsh
In July, 2022, my husband David and I took a road trip in our small motorhome to Lincoln, Nebraska, to deliver my handmade quilt, Sampler of Library Catalog Cards 1851-2006, to the International Quilt Museum, where it was added to the museum’s permanent collection. I had submitted the quilt as a potential donation through the museum’s website and I was thrilled when the museum responded that they wanted to accept it. David and I decided to personally deliver it to Nebraska because it is very large, and cannot be folded. In the end, we were very glad we did, because we then had the opportunity to tour the museum and meet some of the wonderful people who work there.

by Chris Tergliafera
The September 20 regular meeting of the Berlin Central School District Board of Education began with an international travel program proposal. The tentative dates for the trip to Italy would be April 6 through 14. As of now the estimated price for the trip would be $3,800 and would include flights, transportation, hotel, and two meals a day. The tentative cap on the number of students who could possibly attend is 30, and it was stated that fundraising opportunities could be available to help raise funds toward the trip. Transportation from the school to the airport was also requested. Superintendent Joseph Dhara stated that while the district would do what they could to help with transportation, they couldn’t currently make any promises due to driver shortages.
