Sheriff Russo Retirement Walk-Out Ceremony

The Rensselaer County Sheriff’s Office (RCSO) invites all to join them in celebrating Sheriff Patrick Russo’s 48 years in law enforcement with his retirement walk-out ceremony on Thursday, December 28th, at noon, with line-up by 11:50. The ceremony will be held outdoors at the RCSO, 4000 Main Street, so please dress accordingly.

Honoring Roger W. Hogle

Rensselaer County has vowed to never forget the service and sacrifice of our veterans and their families. On Monday, December 11th, veterans, residents, and elected officials joined with family and friends to recognize the life and service of Roger W. Hogle at the monthly Honor a Deceased Veteran ceremony.

A native of Sand Lake, Roger served with the Army during the Vietnam era, enlisting in 1974. He worked on the NIKE guided missile anti-aircraft system, serving in Korea until earning an honorable discharge in Korea, along with other medals and commendations for outstanding service.

As the weather gets colder, the air gets drier. Many of us are using more creams and lotions to combat dry skin. But did you know that using skin care products that have been around your house for a while — sometimes no more than six months or one year — can carry health risks? Bacteria start to grow in opened containers. And the active ingredients in the lotions may break down over time, sometimes making them ineffective and sometimes resulting in skin irritations.

Poestenkill Library • Holiday Lights Annual Appeal

The Friends of the Poestenkill Library invite you to give a monetary holiday gift that will help the Library while honoring or remembering someone special. Each December, during our Holiday Lights Annual Appeal, we light up the library with strings of colorful lights representing the generous gifts received from donors. These donations allow the Library to expand their collection, enhance their existing services, and offer special programs throughout the year. Donors who give at the $75 level are recognized with the placement of a wreath in one of the library’s many windows, and donors of $100 are recognized with the placement of a candle. Together, the lights, wreaths, and candles turn the library into a beautiful symbol of the generosity of the season.

East Nassau Village Board Highlights

The December 13th Board of Trustees meeting was busy and full of updates about upcoming projects for 2024.

The meeting began with Bernadine Wiesen, executive director of Cornell Cooperative Extension, presenting on behalf of the Climate Smart Committee about the New Village Disaster Preparedness Guide. After her presentation, the board approved the draft of the guide and hoped to have it published on the village website.

The treasurer reported that she had submitted the controller's report for 2023 and has been reviewing village procedures for paychecks and insurance. She also hopes to attend a training on electronic mailing to ensure more efficiency.

Fire Department Welcomes New Graduates

Congratulations to graduates of the Troy Fire Department Recruit Firefighting Training Academy. New Troy firefighters graduated on Friday, December 8th during a commencement exercise at Hudson Valley Community College before family, friends, and fellow firefighters.

Recruits who graduated include firefighters Codie Lane, Samuel Sleurs, Alden Mitola, Joshua Helenek, Codi Genthner, Nicholas Clute, Ryan Tubbs, Collin Ward, William Juliano, Christopher Lane, Jack Commerford, Christopher Arnold, Matthew Fusco, Nycholas Styer, Cody Carpenter, Nicholas Brown, and Robert Gapp-Meher.

County Executive Steve McLaughlin presented county commendations to each graduate, with Mayor Patrick Madden, State Senator Jake Ashby, Council President Carmella Mantello, Councilwoman Irene Sorriento, and Legislators Dan Casale, Tom Grant, and Carole Weaver in attendance.

4-H Spreading Holiday Cheer

The Grown in Groveside 4-H group spread holiday cheer this year through the gift of giving and singing. During the month of November, members from both the Grown in Groveside group as well as the Critters 4-H group created wooden ornaments that could be used to decorate a Christmas tree. The ornaments were an angel, snowman, star, and present. All of the wooden pieces were generously cut and donated by Julie Colvin. Also, Morin's Tree Farm donated a Christmas tree to our cause. Our heartfelt thank you to our donors. The club decided to donate the tree to the residents of Wood Park Apartments in Hoosick Falls. On Sunday, December 10th, 4-H members gathered to trim the tree with their ornaments, some lights, and even a star for the top. Members introduced themselves, shared their creative ornaments with the residents, passed out candy canes, and sang a few carols with the residents.

Black Belt Karate Promotions

On Saturday, November 25th, I had the honor and privilege of promoting 9 people to various degrees of Black Belt. Five of these promotees are from one family, the Bassallo Family from Grafton. As these students continue to pursue excellence in the martial arts, they come to realize that there are no limits, only plateaus that they must go beyond. Through hard work, commitment, discipline, and perseverance this is exactly what these Black Belts have done. They have learned much, but their journey is not complete as a martial artist. They seek physical perfection, but the greater goal is perfection of character. It is my hope that they continue to strive to meet these goals, that they may make a difference in every life they touch.

Letters to Santa Claus

Attention children of Grafton: nothing stops the magic of Christmas. The Grafton Community Library has been asked by Santa to help gather letters from the children of Grafton to make sure they arrive at the North Pole on time and safely.

The Grafton Community Library will be accepting letters now through December 19th; that will give the library plenty of time to forward them to the US Postal Service and North Pole.

Children are invited to write Santa a letter, send him good cheer, and let him know how good they have been this past year. Please include the child’s age and gender in the letter.

Children writing letters will receive a letter back from Santa.

Santa’s elves also ask that children print their name and address clearly so Santa does not miss them.

You can hand deliver or mail your letter; then the letters are picked up by Santa’s elves and taken directly to the North Pole.

Letters can be mailed to PO Box H, Grafton NY, 12082. Hand carried letters can be placed in the white mailbox located at the library. No stamps are necessary if dropped in the white mailbox.
