Roadside Clean-up Day

On Saturday, April 20th, at 10 am, the New Lebanon Climate Smart Task Force will be sponsoring Roadside Clean-up Day. Please meet at the Shatford Park Pavilion.

Teams will work for one or more hours along assigned routes. We will then meet back at the park to celebrate our work with refreshments by Maverick’s.

Job and Trade Fair

Hoosick Falls Community Alliance Church is excited to announce that we will be sponsoring our second Job & Trade Fair, this year with the help of Hoosick Falls Central School students. The event will take place on Tuesday, April 23rd, from noon to 3 pm, at the Hoosick Falls Armory, 80 Church Street.

With a few weeks still to go, many businesses have already registered or shown interest in attending. If you are looking for a job, would like to boost your job skills, or learn a trade, stop in and check out all that our vendors have to offer. Refreshments will also be available, along with lots of smiles and assistance wherever you might need it.

Odyssey of the Mind Team Headed to States

Congratulations to the Berlin Elementary School (BES) Odyssey of the Mind team: Willamina Woodcock, Shayana Peterson, Devlin Maciong-Crimmel, Elizah Harrison, Daniel Hart, and Jacqueline Morstad, along with coaches Mrs. Bersaw, Mrs. Scanlon, and Mrs. Winner. The team won 2nd place in their division for the competition problem posed to them, as well as receiving the top score for the long-term problem.

For Your Health: One Easy Change

You’ve probably heard about health risks associated with BPA in canned foods. Fortunately, many companies have moved away from using BPA to line cans. Many cans now say “BPA-free” on them. However, as "BPA-free" becomes a common label on cans of food, concerns have been rising about the safety of the new chemicals being used to replace them. In many cases, companies have switched to other chemicals also known to be harmful to our health. A common one is PVC/vinyl. PVC is not a good substitute because it’s made from vinyl chloride, a known carcinogen. Other new linings are made from polystyrene, which is also a possible human carcinogen. Some of the newest liners, which are partially derived from plants, have not been completely studied for safety. What we do know is that the chemicals used to line the cans leach into the food and end up in your body when you eat the food.

Paint Recycling Event in Troy

There will be a paint recycling event on Saturday, April 6th, from 9 am to 1 pm at Hudson Valley Community College. The event is open to all Rensselaer County residents. Registration is required, and you can register by visiting circular.eco/event/rensselaer-paint-recycling-event. Paint must be in its original labeled container; no cracked or leaking containers will be accepted. Accepted materials include urethanes, oil and latex-based paints, acrylic paint, varnishes, shellacs, lacquers, primers, and clear coating. Repair Cafe

On Saturday, April 13th, from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Austerlitz Town Hall, 816 Route 203, Spencertown, there will be a repair cafe co-sponsored by the Town of Austerlitz Climate Smart Community, the Columbia NE Repair Cafe, the towns of Austerlitz, Chatham, New Lebanon, and the Village of East Nassau. Bring in your broken items to be fixed for free by your skilled neighbors. Repair coaches will work on clocks, lamps, lawn mowers, textiles, jewelry, small wood furniture, and more. Nassau Annual Tailgate Sale

On Saturday, April 27th, from 8 am to noon, come to the 13th Annual Tailgate Sale held at the Town of Nassau Highway Garage, 599 Central Nassau Road, East Nassau. A tailgate sale is where buyers and sellers meet to sell/trade in the back of their vehicle such items as farm products, chickens, ducks, geese, turkeys, piglets, goats, sheep, vegetable plants, flowers, berry plants, maple syrup, crafts, and other local products. Marie O’Meara Galvin – Obituary

Marie O’Meara Galvin, 104, died Tuesday, March 12th, 2024, at St. Peter’s Hospital after a short illness. She was born in Hoosick Falls on March 23rd, 1919, to the late Philip and Mary O’Meara. She moved to Albany in 1959.

Marie earned a Master of Education from the New York State College for Teachers. She began her teaching career at Hoosick Falls High School. In 1948, she left teaching for a time to raise her children but returned in the mid-1960’s to teach at the Manpower Adult Education Center and then the Adult Learning Center.
