Raymond F. Schaefer – Obituary

Berlin – Raymond F. Schaefer, Jr., 69, of Ocala Fla, died peacefully at his home on September 1, 2022, after a long and courageous battle with Lewy Body Dementia and Parkinson’s Disease.

Born in North Adams, MA on May 9, 1953, he was the son of the late Raymond F. and Evelyn Gardner Schaefer Sr.  Raised in Berlin, NY, Ray was a 1972 graduate of Berlin Central School. He enlisted in the US Navy Seabees on September 13, 1972 and served 3 years of active duty. Following active duty, he served in the Naval Reserves for 20 years, retiring from the Navy on March 1, 1994. At the end of his active duty in the Navy, Ray began employment at the Watervliet Arsenal in Watervliet, NY, working in manufacturing arms and equipment for the US Army. His kids especially remember seeing pictures of the large cannons made there and knowing that their dad made them. While working at the arsenal, Ray continued his education in the Arsenal Apprenticeship Program, receiving a degree in Metallurgy from Hudson Valley Community College in Troy, NY. Richard S. Motsiff – Obituary

Hoosick Falls – Richard “Rick” S. Motsiff, 73, passed away on September 9, 2022. He resided on Saratoga Street in Hoosick Falls. He was born on January 21, 1949, in Hoosick Falls, son of the late Stanley and Zita (Govone) Motsiff.

Rick was educated at schools in Hoosick Falls and served in the United States Air Force. He was formerly employed at Oak Mitsui in Hoosick Falls until retiring. The Berlin Mountaineers Kick Off the 2022–23 School Year

The Mountaineer spirit was bright in spite of the rainy first morning of school on Tuesday last week.

At BMHS the students started their morning with a Character Education assembly. During the assembly Principal Brownell welcomed the Mountaineers back and talked about arrival and dismissal procedures, hallway and code of conduct expectations, and what academic recognitions will take place throughout the year. 

The district’s new Safety Resource Officer, Deputy Austin McGuire from the Rensselaer County Sheriff Department, also spoke during the assembly. Deputy McGuire introduced himself to the student body and also greeted the students at both buildings as they arrived first thing in the morning. Fire Chief Jim Goyer Presentation

Grafton Historical Society

The Grafton Historical Society will present a program on the Grafton Fire Department on Wednesday, September 21 at 7 pm at Grafton Town Hall. Fire Chief Jim Goyer will talk about the history of the department and his experiences with it since he was a teenager. Chief Goyer is one of the longest serving fire chiefs in Rensselaer County. This program is free and the public is invited. Light refreshments will be served. Veterans Hall Open House

Everyone knows and loves a veteran.

Veterans Hall is proud to honor the veterans of Rensselaer, Saratoga, Washington, Albany, and surrounding counties at an Open House on Saturday, September 24 from 10 am to 2 pm, at the Schaghticoke Fairgrounds. We encourage everyone to stop in to share a picture or information on a veteran you know. Veterans Hall is a tribute to veterans past and present. Volunteers are compiling a list of veterans’ names from these local areas. Getting your veteran’s name on the list is free, easy, and good way to ensure his/her service will be remembered. Brunswick Elks Lodge Benefit for Christopher’s House

It was spaghetti for dinner Monday evening at Brunswick Elks Lodge. Elks Club chef and lecturing knight, Kathy Betzinger, lovingly made 64 spaghetti dinners to benefit Christopher’s House, the South Troy women veterans’ home run by Christine Rem, with support from Betzinger’s sister, Jane Cordts. 

The Eastwick Press spoke with ex-exalted ruler and Elks Club member, Dale Loucks, about the spaghetti dinner and their mission to assist Christopher’s House with their needs during the evening.

Fall Events at the Louis Miller Museum

The Hoosick Township Historical Society invites everyone Sunday, September 25, from 1 to 4 pm to an afternoon gathering celebrating Emmajane Cottrell. Emmajane, a lifelong resident of the area, turned 100 in July! Come celebrate with her and enjoy a show featuring paintings she has done over the last century. This event will be held on the lawn. Refreshments will be available. 

Thursday, September 29, at 6 pm, Katie Brownell will present on Sarah Rudd, a Bennington woman, mother, and wife of militiaman Joseph Rudd. This is the story of a woman who put the safety of her children over her own comfort in a time of war and hardship. It is also a story of agency, decisiveness, survival, and motherhood bound up in the history of the Battle of Bennington.

Upping the Ante for a Codes Enforcement Officer

The Town of Hoosick’s Codes Enforcement Officer (CEO), Lloyd Moses, has resigned, effective September 1, although he is working one day a week to help the Town out. At the Town Board meeting on Monday, September 12, Town Supervisor Mark Surdam indicated he recently received two applications but is not sure either applicant has State certification.
