Tsatsawassa Pig Roast

On Saturday, August 16, the Tsatsawassa Protective Fire Company Inc. will hold its 26th Annual Pig Roast on the firehouse grounds located just off Route 20 in the hamlet of Brainard. Doors will open at 1 pm and the afternoon will be filled with fun events including door prizes and games as well as hot dogs, sausage/hamburgers and drinks, all while the “whole pig” covered with foil, will be roasting on the spit in view of the attendees.

At about 5 pm the roast pig will be served with a baked potato, applesauce, corn on the cob – all followed by ice cream with your choice of strawberry or chocolate sauce.

Tickets may be reserved by calling 518-766-3815. They cost $20 for adults and $10 for children 5 to 12 years old. Children under five enter free. The event is held under cover of the large pavilion in the rear of the fire house where parking is also available.

Completing the event will be a large raffle, and members are currently canvassing area residents to offer them an opportunity to support this project with the purchase of tickets for which prizes have been donated by area merchants. Special thanks to those merchants who include Jackson’s Old Chatham House, Antiques at Bailey’s and Ultra Lube, LLC in Nassau, Lebanon Valley Speedway, Angel’s Trumpet Flowers and Gifts, Mario’s Restaurant and Hermon T. Huntley Insurance Agency all in New Lebanon, as well as Curtis Lumber in Schodack. Additional door and game prizes will be distributed during the event.

The Folk Duo Divinitress Performs

Local acoustic folk duo Divinitress will be performing at the New Lebanon Library on Friday, August 8, from 6 to 8 pm. Their blend of harmonies and acoustic instruments give the duo a unique and uplifting sound. Weather permitting, the duo will perform on the Library’s patio. Should the rains come, they will move the concert indoors. This event is free and open to the public, although donations for the performers are welcome.

Divinitress consists of singer-guitarist Tistrya Grace, who has spent ten years performing at coffee houses and festivals, and versatile Berkshire singer-songwriter Erin Laundry. They play a combination of original songs along with popular covers that encourage the audience to sing along.

Collaging Workshop At The New Lebanon Library

Ruth J. Abram, Columbia County artist, will conduct  a collaging workshop at the New Lebanon Library on Wednesday, August 6, at 4:30 pm. This event, which is open to anyone aged 3 to 100, is free and open to the public. Advanced registration is recommended by calling the Library at 518-794-8844 or emailing leb@taconic.net.

Abram has been doing collage in fabric and in paper since the l970s. In the last few years her work has been the subject of two exhibits – in Manhattan and, more recently, in East Greenbush. The workshop is suitable for anyone who can cut paper and use paste. Everyone will leave with a collage, as they define that term, and a happy feeling that creating art brings on.

New Lebanon Country Market

The New Lebanon Country Market at Windswept Farm will be featuring a kid’s market on August 17.  In addition to our regular vendors, we will have children set up selling things that they have made.  It is free for children to vend.  Please contact me in advance at tistryagrace@gmail.com to reserve a spot.  Thank you to Carin DeJong for the fabulous idea!

Our produce vendors are now harvesting tomatoes, carrots, beets, beans, peas, kale, salad greens, cucumbers, garlic and garlic scapes, bok choy, fresh herbs and much, much more.  Our fruit vendor will be coming sometime in mid-August when his crops are ready to pick.

Author Julia Pomeroy To Give Travelogue At New Lebanon Library

Arrowhead Writer-In-Residence Offers Children’s Writing Workshop At The New Lebanon Library

Local youth literature author and editor Jana Laiz, of North Egremont, MA, will conduct a  writing workshop for children at the New Lebanon Library on Tuesday,  July 29, at 1 pm.  During this workshop, which is appropriate for ages 9 through 12, Laiz will  supply writing prompts or kids can let their imaginations run wild. Workshop participants will write with Laiz and then share with the group.  All materials will be provided.

Jana Laiz is an award winning author of numerous picture books and young adult novels as well as an educator with over 20 years experience. Her Weeping Under This Same Moon was named an International Reading Association Notable Book. Laiz is writer-in-residence at Herman Melville’s Arrowhead.

Kinderhook Lake Chicken Barbecue

The Kinderhook Lake Corporation will host a Chicken Barbecue fundraiser on Saturday, August 2, from 5 to 7:30 pm at the Kinderhook Elks Lodge, 2750 Route 9H in Kinderhook, under the pavilion, rain or shine. Dinner will be eat-in or take-out. The cost is $12 in advance or $13 at the door for half a chicken, baked potato, corn on the cob, coleslaw and beverage.

Raffles with great prizes and entertainment will be provided. You may purchase dinners at the door or in advance from any KLC Board member. Last year tickets were sold out, so get your tickets early. For further information, please contact Rick Theriault at 518-573-5088. Proceeds will benefit our Water Quality Fund and other costs of maintaining the Lake, including dam repair, fish stocking and weed control. Please help us to keep our lake clean and inviting for fun and recreation for all. Invite family, friends and neighbors to have a good time and socialize.

New Lebanon Town Board Action – Can You Hear Me Now?

It was a sultry night at the New Lebanon Town Board meeting Tuesday, July 8, a meeting made even more sultry because the air conditioner wasn’t on and some ladies were looking to put the Town back on the map with a museum of sorts that nobody on the Board had ever heard of.

“This is a brand new $500,000 Town Hall,” said resident Johanna Johnson Smith, “and you have to choose between hearing what you guys are saying and being comfortable. For a half a million dollars, shouldn’t there be a solution to that?”
