Hoosick Falls – Harry Leslie Michie, 91, of Hoosick Falls passed away Monday, October 10, 2016 at Albany Medical Center.[private]Born on November 18, 1924, in Hoosick Falls, he was the son of the late Leslie L. Michie and Elizabeth (Bayne) Michie. His parents came from Scotland and settled in Hoosick Falls in the early 1900s. Here they brought up three children including Harry, his sister, Mildred, and his late brother, James. The family moved to the house, where Harry has since resided, in 1938. Harry attended Hoosick Falls public schools, graduating from the Walter A. Wood High School in 1943. After graduating from high school, he was drafted into the Army. Harry served in the Pacific during WWII from June 1943 to January 1946. After returning from the war, he worked at the Oneida Meat Market, Noble and Wood, and in construction until 1958 when he started his career as a custodian for the Hoosick Falls Schools. He served as the Superintendent of Buildings and Grounds for Hoosick Falls Central School for many years as a devoted, hardworking employee. He retired in 1987.
For 54 years, Harry was the loving husband of the late Lillian (Eldred) Michie, whom he married on October 14, 1950. He was a long time member of the First United Church, Presbyterian of Hoosick Falls and a parishioner at the Hoosick Baptist Church. He was also a long time member of the Hoosick Falls Fire Department, a life member of the Masons, and a life member of The Veterans of Foreign Wars.
In his younger years, Harry was an avid bowler. He enjoyed camping with family and friends, telling stories, and he excelled at good-natured teasing. In his later years, he enjoyed all outings with neighbors, family and friends. He also delighted in telling others about the accomplishments of his granddaughter, Megan.
Harry will be missed by many. Survivors include his son, Robert G. Michie and daughter-in-law Carol (Brenenstuhl) Michie of Rhinebeck, NY; granddaughter Megan S. Michie of Frederick, MD.; sister Mildred (Michie) Killeen of Troy, NY; several nieces and nephews and many loving extended family members.
Funeral Services were held on Monday, October 17 at 11 am at the Hoosick Baptist Church where Pastor Dale Hall officiated. Interment followed in Maple Grove Cemetery.
Relatives and friends called at the Mahar Funeral Home in Hoosick Falls on Sunday, October 16 from 4 to 7 pm.
