Sunday April 1, 1838: Today I took my one-horse wagon and carried cousin Beriah Wylie to the Shakers meeting and tonight we gathered two barrels of sap and tonight about eight o’clock Birtus Cowen came and wanted to stay tonight. He said I had told him he might stay but don’t run away from Danford. You remember, Birtus, that I always advised you not to run away when you threatened of leaving him, but go to your father for council.
[private]Monday: On this evening I walked up to Zach Chapman’s and he agreed to ride with me to town meeting tomorrow and vote the Van Buren ticket, and then I went in to John Sacket and he told me he would vote the Van Buren ticket. Tonight Birtus Cowen stayed to my house. I walked down to let Danford know he was to my house, but said Danford had got to bed and I returned home without letting him know it.
Tuesday: Today I took my single wagon and carried Mr. Zach Chapman to town meeting at the new house of Hiram Brown’s near H. Platt’s. I paid about 20 cts for brandy and cake. We elected all our ticket, the Van Buren candidates. Today I bargained with one Mr. Hinkley to come next week on Wednesday and make me a few thousand of chestnut shingles at one dollar per thousand. I do agree to help him saw the timber and he agrees to make me good shingles.
Sunday: I am quite unwell with a cold.
Tuesday: This afternoon I walked over to Hiram Brown’s where the town officers met. I drew states money that was appropriated for common school which was seven dollars and 98 cts and the money I drew from the town was six dol and 66 cts. I paid six cts for bitters and going home I called to Doctor Graves and had two teeth drawn and I paid him 12 cts for drawing said teeth.
Wednesday: Today Mr. Hinkley came and began to make shingle for me.
Thursday: Today I took my single wagon and carried Nathaniel Wylie and Lucinda Clemmons to Pool Hill to take the stage for the west. Today I paid Mr. Hinkley 75 cts for making 3/4 of a thousand of shingle and he quit because he did not know how to make them.
Friday: On this evening I made the school bill. Mine was nine dollars and sixty cts.[/private]
