Trouble With The Tenants

March 10, 2016 By eastwickpress

Sunday July 2 1837: Today I took my covered wagon and carried my wife, five children and our hired girl Phila Nigh all to the Shakers to meeting, a very large collection of people.

[private]Monday: Today an agent from the Saratoga Fire Insurance Company came and took a survey of my buildings at 12 hundred dollars.  The agent, Mr. Pierce, left the survey bill in my own hands for consideration whether I returned the survey to the Insurance office and if I did I am to pay five dollars and ten cts for the insurance five years. I did not pay anything for the trouble of Pierce taking the survey, I only give him his dinner.  A small shower towards night. On this week the school (mistress) Miss Freelove Pierce boards with us.

Tuesday: This morning I started to return to Saratoga County to the town of Moreau after Mr. Daniel Kites family. I only got about a half mile and my horse was quite lame with a gall on the breast and I returned home. I spent the forenoon going to the neighbors trying to hire a horse but could not hire any.

Wednesday: This morning Mr. Daniel Kites started with my wagon and harness and one and Mr. Rowland Danford horse on side of mine to go after his wife and children and part of a load goods to Saratoga County to Moreau. I put him up provision and horse feed and let him have two dol and 50 cts cash to pay his expenses on the road.  Today I began to mow. I mowed on the hill a lot that I seeded for pasture where I had spring rye and oats last year..

Today my wife walked over to my Rodgers house to see to Mr. Daniel Kites’ furniture for the doors were left open by the family that lives in the other part of the house by the names of Lehasa Holister and my wife went into the chamber and there she found a young woman abed with a small child to appearance about 12 hours old. She could not learn what her name was nor where she belonged and Mrs. Hollister refused to give any information about her and was highly offended because my wife discovered the stranger and the infant.

Thursday: This morning I rode over to my Rodgers house to Mr. Lehasa Hollister’s to inquire of him how it happened that stranger girl happened to be there in such circumstances. He told me he did not know her situation when he took her in but a few days ago. He promised he would carry her away by next Monday and he payed me up to Saturday for house rent and cow pasture which was two dol and 59 cts and promised me he would move out of my house the fore part next week.[/private]
