George’s Wife Takes A Journey on the Canal Boats

March 25, 2016 By eastwickpress

Sunday, August 14, 1837: Today my daughter Sarah had a wasp sting her on the temple and it struck all over her and in a short time large blotches came out all over her, which lasted more than an hour and during that time she was in great agony. We gave her milk and water. I sent for the widow Betsey Wylie to come for my wife being gone.

[private]Wednesday: On this evening I took the single wagon and my wife and I rode up to see cousin Samuel Holcomb. He remains quite sick.

Sunday, August 20: Today I took my covered wagon and carried my wife and two oldest daughters and Eliza Wylie to Berlin to the Christian Chapel to Elder Moser’s meeting. We returned home by four o’clock.

Monday: Today Mr. Henry Meneck and wife from Troy called and took dinner and said Meneck wanted to bargain for my cheese but I had rather wait a spell longer.

Friday, September 15: This morning at one o’clock I started for Troy with my wife and daughter Charlotte to take passage for to go to Rome on the Canal and I went by the way of Guy Moffitt’s. We got to Troy about noon and I got a passage for all on a line boat at one cent per head and more in particular a passage for my wife and daughter to Rome for one dollar each.

Thursday, September 28: Today we worked at our cider mill and finished it. Today Mr. Hazard Morey came 3/4 of a day and helped us finish the cider mill and he charged me one dol and fifty cts for what he did yesterday and today and he agreed to take Ezra Sackett to pay him. On this evening I rode up to the post office to see if I had a letter from my wife but not any.

Friday: Today I went to Troy. I carried eight bushels of apples and sold part at 25 cts per and the rest at 18 cts per. Tonight I met my wife and daughter Charlotte in Troy. They returned to Troy this morning at eight o’clock from the canal.  They came from Utica in a line boat at 1/2 ct per mile each. I met them at Henry Meneck’s and there we stayed.

Sunday: I fetched Laura Ann Chapman home from Troy with us to old Mr. Zach Chapman’s and she paid me fifty cts for her passage. We got home about 3 o’clock this afternoon.[/private]
