Wednesday, April 12, 1837: Today a boy named Cushman flung from a horse and got killed. He is from Greenbush school, he came into this neighborhood with Mr. Buckley and wife to Adam Brown’s on a visit.
Friday, April 21: On Tuesday morning the wife of Old Major Brown died, today Mother Holcomb is eighty-seven years of age.
[private]Saturday: I drew manure on my corn ground. It remains cold and a backward spring, I have foddered all my hay excepting what is on over the stable.
Sunday: Towards night I took the single wagon and I and my wife rode over to Hiram Newton’s and my wife returned and fetched Fila Nigh home to work for us this season as is before agreed, and I returned home through my swamp to put up some fence.
Thursday, April 27: I put up a leach and our people cleaned house and I almost plowed my garden and then a sad accident happened which I shall relate. I was alarmed by my family, Mother Holcomb had started to go up to her chamber, she had a fit or had fallen down stairs, we can not tell which, and fell backwards on her back which bruised her very much. I had Dr. Right in less than an hour, he did nothing for her. Tonight she came to, so as to speak, but did not sense anything. At sunset I had Frederick Russel take my horse and wagon and fetch sister Eleanor. She got here about midnight and brother Sylvester called a spell this evening. Sister Eleanor took care all night. I and my wife sat up till two in the morning and when we were in the fright I left my horses and plow and when I returned to my team they were tangled in the traces and stepped to them too quick and went betwixt them to take them off and they turned and run the plow bounded over me. I held them and by the line and they drew me about two rose and the lines broke and then they ran and one of my horses broke his nigh fore leg or below fet lock near the hoof. I sent by Doctor Right for Allen Spencer. He came and bandaged up my horse ankle and I paid him fifty cts for coming.
Friday: I mended fence on the hill between the woods and pasture. John Dunking fetched us a new cheese basket at one dollar and we paid him in meat and butter. This morning Doctor Right came and bled Mother and she was better and thought that she might recover her health partly. Sister Eleanor watched with Mother.
Saturday: Today Doctor Right sent Doctor Guile to visit her. He did deal out some medicine but we was fearful about her recovery. Today I mended my line fence joining J.B. Maxon’s where the river runs. Tonight brother Simeon Wylie’s wife came and watched with Mother, but she appeared more restless but thought it was because her phisic did not operate. We went to bed about ten o’clock.
Sunday: This morning at nearly one o’clock we all are called up at the alarm of death. Mother expired in half an hour after we all came round her bed. She died without very hard struggles and closed her own eyes. Deacon Pierce and wife and Rowland Danford and wife and John Sackett and wife and the widow Betsy Wylie was called in, but did not come until she had done breathing and Deacon Pierce made prayer and at daylight they returned home.[/private]
