A Stormy Winter

October 15, 2015 By eastwickpress

Wednesday, February 24, 1836: This morning early after breakfast I started from Mr. Clapp’s for home.  I walked about three miles and then a man with a double sleigh overtook me and I rode about ten miles. We stopped in Goshen and I treated with brandy to a tavern and paid 12 cts and when I left the man I gave him six cts. I then walked on and got back to said Minor’s about 4 o’clock. [private]I took dinner at Samuel Minor’s and then we made ready for starting for home. At nearly five this afternoon we started and it rained quite hard and has rained all day. Cousin young Samuel and Avary went with us part of the way down the mountain to help us through the drifts, and we soon got onto the stage road and then we soon came to Pittsfield and it rained all the way. We got there about seven this evening to brother Wylie’s and stayed.

Thursday: We stayed to brother Wylie’s for we could not come home on account of a severe snow and wind and drifting up the road

Friday: Today the wind has stopped blowing but continued to snow. After dinner we started for home. We got along over the mountain very well but from Lebanon home the road some drifted, and Mr. Morey broke it as we came. We got home at sundown.

Monday: Today I took the cutter and went over to Aseneth Newton’s and carried potatoes and corn for my cows. On the road going I got into a snow drift near the school house. I returned and went by the way of J. B. Maxon’s through his lots. Today quite snowy and blows and today Samuel Beers came to move my sister Eleanor but it being so stormy they did not go today and brother Beers stays all night with us.

Tuesday: This forenoon I shovelled snow on the highway, and this afternoon I shovelled a path to get to my woods on the hill. Today sister Eleanor moves, but they did not carry but a few things, the road is quite drifted.

Monday March 7: Today the Lebanon Shakers or what is called the brick yard basin had a saw mill and machine shop burn down. Today brother Beers and wife came out after a load of her furniture.

Saturday March 26: This afternoon I tended a caucus meeting at Lewis M. Brown’s store to choose delegates to nominate town officers. I rode over in my cutter and carried brother Sylvester.  I drove my youngest colt for the first time alone.

Sunday: Today I took the cutter and rode over to Aseneth Newton’s and carried my wife there and I rode round to Squ Nathan Howard’s. I took dinner to said Howard’s, and then he drew me a form to write an article if agreement, or in other words a lease for a tenant to Amis Chapman for my Rodgers house and garden.

Tuesday: Today Mr. Amis Chapman and myself we signed the article of agreement and I lease him a house and garden. Mr. Salmon Oins witnessed said article and we put said writing into said Oins keeping.

Thursday: Today I took my wife and my daughter Sarah into my cutter and carried them to cousin Samuel Holcomb’s and we took dinner there and I left my horse and walked up to Bennett’s Tavern with Samuel Holcomb and there I was one of the committee to choose town officers.[/private]
