Hiring Help

August 13, 2015 By eastwickpress

Saturday, October 10, 1835 Today I went to Pittsfield with apples and cider. On the way I stopped to Mr. Clark’s tavern and settled up with his daughter for teaching our school this summer past.  I paid her nine dollars and she gave a receit and my daughter Angeline fetched the receit home. I went on to Pittsfield and sold out my load. I sold my apples at 25 to 37 cts per bushel. I had about 14 bushels.

[private]Sunday: This evening I rode to Joshua Crocker’s and engaged his son to work for me.

Friday, October 16: I gathered apples and ground apples and made cider and this evening I and my wife went to Mr. R. Danford’s and helped them pare apples and took tea.

Monday: This morning I paid said James Harrington the cash 37 cts for making the last half thousand of shingle, which makes 7½ thousand and I have paid him one dol cash before which pays him for making one thousand and for the other six thousand I have agreed to deliver him six barrels of cider.

Monday, October 26: I drew a load of wood from my Rodgers farm and I drew pumpkins and this evening I took my team and carried Peter Surdam’s wife to Squ Hazard’s to work in his carding factory and Peter went with me.

Tuesday: Today at noon a boy came to my house that called his name Howard Coen. He had a father living half a mile north of Alps village in Nassau. He bargained with me to work at the rate of four dollars per month. He agreed to work as long as we both were suited. He says he is 13 years old. On this forenoon Peter Surdam helped me shake apple trees to pay me for carrying his wife to Hancock.

Wednesday October 28, 1835: On this evening I went with my wagon and carried my wife and daughter Charlotte and Sister Betsy Wylie to Lebanon to Edwin Griggs store and my wife bought a calico dress at 31 cts per and paid in chestnuts, walnuts and eggs and socks.

Tuesday, Nov 3: We gathered apples and we butchered a pig. He got hurt and we butchered him before he took any injury. Mr. R. Danford helped butcher him and I gave him one fore quarter for butchering, and I gave the widow Betsey one quarter.[/private]
