The Summer Of The Owls Starts July 3
Legend has it that the name Hoosick comes from an Indian word meaning “valley of the owls.” This summer the community is invited to participate in celebration of the Hoosick’s history and the iconic creature from which its name is derived.
Dubbed the Summer of the Owls, the six week long celebration begins Wednesday, July 3, at 7 pm prior to the first Community Band concert in Wood Park. Concert-goers will be among the first to see the design for a 30’x35’ mural that will be painted over the summer.
The summer long celebration will include Arts & Owls programs to be held in conjunction with subsequent band concerts. A live owl demonstration and nest-box building activities are also planned.
Community members are also invited to participate in six two hour workshops at the Armory focused on the art and science of creating a mural. Workshops are come-as-you-can and free and open to participants of all ages.
In addition, local artists will be creating smaller window and door murals throughout the Village. Fifteen owl sculptures will be custom designed, decorated and displayed throughout the community. The owl sculptures will be available at HAYC3’s annual Harvest Dinner auction.
The Summer of the Owls will culminate with the unveiling of the final mural and art block party on Wednesday, August 26.
