East Nassau – Catherine L. “Kay” Shuhart Mabeus, 74, of Hanky Mull Hill Road, East Nassau, NY, died on Saturday, December 15, 2012, at Albany Memorial Hospital after a valiant and courageous fight against cancer under the care of Community Hospice of Rensselaer County. Her husband Robert J. “Bob” Mabeus, Sr., 75, died suddenly at home on Saturday a short time later.
Born on August 8, 1938, Kay was the daughter of the late George and Grace Stallone Shuhart. She was raised in the East Greenbush/Rensselaer, NY, area and attended Van Rensselaer High School. She and Bob were married in St. John’s Church in Rensselaer on April 12, 1958. She was a homemaker in her early years. After raising her family she worked for the New York State Department of Taxation and Finance as a principal account clerk retiring in 1999 after 27 years of service. Kay was a communicant and very active member of the Church of the Immaculate Conception in New Lebanon, NY, where she was a director of Faith Formation. She was an avid poet and loved to frequent casinos and take her annual birthday trip to Lake George. Kay loved music and played in a group called “Taxes Tootsies.” She was also on local radio WGNA known as “Special K.” She was the backbone of her family, always giving love to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was dearly loved and will be truly missed.
Bob was born March 20, 1937, in Albany, NY. He was the only child of Caspar J. and Mary L. Tanner Mabeus. He attended Our Lady of Angels School and Christian Brothers Academy in Albany. He had worked for the City of Albany Fire and Rescue Department, Hoffman’s Car Wash and, at the time of his death, was employed by GSA Security working at the Bank of America in Albany. He was an Eagle Scout, an avid hunter, a member of the Rensselaer County Alliance and a member of the NRA.
Survivors include their children, Robert J. Mabeus Jr. and wife Ulrike of Stephentown, NY, Mary Grace and husband Glenn Monuteaux of Schodack, NY, John C. Mabeus and Marissa DiMay and AnnMarie Mabeus and Todd Garrett of East Nassau, five grandchildren and five great-grandchildren along with several nieces and nephews. Kay is also survived by siblings Thelma and husband Mario Fedele of Colonie, NY, Dolores and husband Lou D’Ambrosi of Rensselaer and George and wife Beverly Shuhart and Paul and wife Cathy Shuhart of East Nassau.
Cremation will take place at the Gardner Earl Memorial Crematorium in Troy, NY. A Memorial Service for both Kay and Bob is to be held on Friday, December 21, at 3 pm in the Church of the Immaculate Conception, 732 US Route 20, New Lebanon, with Rev. John L. Close and Deacon Peter Quinn officiating. A time of remembrance will follow in the Church’s Fellowship Hall.
