Periodically The Eastwick Press receives reports from readers about sightings of mountain lions in the area. Quite a few of these have come from the Berlin-Stephentown area, and it generates a lot of interest as to whether these big cats are making a comeback, just as the coyote, bear, moose and wild turkey have done. This interest brought out a group of 20 people to the Stephentown Library Tuesday evening to hear nature author Robert Tougias discuss the topic and his new book, The Quest For The Eastern Cougar.

Young Shocked By BCS Bond Impasse

At last week’s Berlin School Board meeting, the Board failed to vote to authorize a bond of $5.1 million for the renovation of its school buildings and for bringing the Berlin School District closer to School Superintendant Dr. Stephen Young’s vision of a 21st century school district. Board President Gina Goodermote and Board Member Jim Willis had put together a plan to use $5.1 million in State aid and $1.75 million of the District’s Capital Reserve fund for this purpose.

Work To Begin On Dougherty’s Corner At Last

The very latest word on Wednesday from site owner Alex Koks and builder Craig Kennedy was that work should begin on the long vacant Dougherty’s corner on Thursday, March 29. Koks and Kennedy met with AOW Associates, Inc. of Albany, a construction management service, last Wednesday to iron out the final details.

Petersburgh To Buy New Fire Truck

The Petersburgh Fire Department was given overwhelming approval by the voters to buy a new fire truck at the vote held on Tuesday evening March 27. Twenty-eight ballots were cast – 26 in favor and 1 against. One was void because the voter was not enrolled.
