This past week the Berlin boys basketball team split games with Heatly and Waterford in Central Hudson Valley League action. First, against Heatly, the Mountaineers came out charging, taking a 21-4 lead in the first quarter, one of their strongest individual quarters of the entire season.
The Mountaineers held off a charge by the Hornets in the second and third quarters, holding the lead the entire time. In the end, led by three players in double digits, Berlin won 58-42. Seth Hawk scored 15 points, Cullen O’Brien had 14 and Tyler Bacon had 13 points.
Next the Mountaineers had to face off against the top team in the CHVL, Waterford. The Mountaineers
looked sharp in the opening minutes, taking a quick lead and holding their own on the boards. Unfortunately that didn’t last long. The Fordians went on the offensive and saw a huge quarter, and game, from Steve Fratianni, who scored 32 points. Despite a lopsided score at halftime, the Berlin team came out battling in the third quarter, matching Waterford point for point. Sophomore Cullen O’Brien led Berlin with 14 points while Dylan Hover scored 10. The final score was 71-34.
Berlin plays next on Friday against Germantown.
