Members and friends gathered to celebrate the success of the first season of Starry Ridge Farm CSA, operated by Kolin Buzerak, of Petersburgh. CSA, Community Supported Agriculture, is a unique opportunity to directly support the production of your food. By purchasing a “share” in the weekly harvest, members become partners with the local farmer, ensuring access to the freshest, most healthful food available and support responsible stewardship of the land.
Gallons of cider were pressed with apples from the old homestead farm.
As a seasonal treat, the Starry Ridge baker offered delicious pumpkin rolls, which were a perfect complement to cheese from Mapledale Farm of Berlin. A walking tour of the farm gardens, growing fields, berry patches and pond were interspersed by visits with the chickens, pigs, ducks and Harold, the Starry Ridge rescue mascot goose! Many thanks to Hay Berry Farm for the use of the cider press. Hay Berry is a local organic pick your own blueberry farm on Babcock Lake Road in Hoosick.
Sunday, September 25, was officially the New York Locavore Challenge Day, a campaign by the Northeast Organic Farming Association of New York promoting locally grown food and organic farms. Thousands gathered across the state for potlucks and events in support of this growing movement.
Starry Ridge Farm will be accepting new members for the 2012 season offering many expanded opportunities for the finest organic foods available locally. For more information contact: starryridgefarm@gmail.com.
