The Berlin boys JV soccer team had a great season. They finished 5-6-1, one of the best records in past years.
The team started with 15 players but soon moved two players up to the varsity level. Three potential modified players tried out for the team and made JV at the beginning of the season. Jackson Burhans, Zack Spaniol and Kyle Burdick were a welcome addition to the team this year, solidifying the midfield and defense. Six other players were new to the team this year. Reid Roscoe added depth to the goalie spot, sharing the duties with Andrew Zlotnick our returning keeper. Combined they had over 160 saves and allowed only 35 goals. Anthony Delsonnio, Cody Seel, Aaron Burdick, John Schatz and Cullen O’Brien shored up both the offense and defense with some needed speed and strength giving us the chance to mix it up better with the bigger schools. Returning veterans Rickey Dickenson, Dylan Hover and Dan von Schilgen lead the team in scoring power and versatility by filling in for any position when needed.
The team saw victories this year against LaSalle, Mt. Anthony, and Catholic Central, and no team was able to put together two wins against us. Coach Burhans’ comments were all positive about the players, “all the guys showed great sportsmanship, with everyone willing to move around in positions and get experience in different areas. The older guys were accepting of the younger players and were good role models. I think we were able to get everyone a lot of playing time, which is what the JV program is all about.” The team looked sharp and spectators commented about the teamwork and good all-around play even when the team was behind. Four players will move up to the varsity level to compete with them in Sectional play.
