The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) is sponsoring a family fishing day on Saturday, June 26, from noon until 2 pm at Grafton Lakes State Park. “This is a great opportunity for families to learn more about the great sport of fishing and New York’s natural resources,” DEC Biologist Joelle Ernst said. “This day is set up to teach participants about fishing and promote a rewarding activity that will last a lifetime.”
Everyone is invited to take part in this event – no fishing license is required. Ordinarily, anyone age 16 or older is required to obtain a license when fishing or helping another person to fish. Worms, loaner fishing rods and instruction will be available for all participants. Supplies are limited, so people are encouraged to bring their own equipment if they have it.
The free fishing event is one of four allowable DEC sponsored free fishing clinics in each DEC Region. In addition to the regional free fishing clinics, the weekend of June 26 and 27 is designated as a Free Fishing weekend, where anyone can fish throughout the state without a license. The Free Fishing Days program began in 1991 to allow all people the opportunity to sample the incredible fishing New York State has to offer.
For more information about the event, contact event organizer Joelle Ernst at 518-402-8891. For a list of currently scheduled fishing events, please visit DEC’s website at www.dec.ny.gov/outdoor/27123.html. Be sure to check the website periodically to see if additional events have been added.
While a DEC fishing license is not required for either the free fishing weekend or regional free fishing events, DEC’s other fishing rules and regulations remain in effect.
