Matt Carr will present a program called “Saving History Through Metal Detecting” to the Stephentown Historical Society on Monday, January 4. The meeting is at 7:30 pm at the Heritage Center on Garfield Road (County Route 26) in Stephentown. It is free and open to the public. The building is handicapped accessible. For directions, telephone 518-733-5675.
Carr has been involved in searching out historic artifacts for ten years with his metal detector. He will tell how he got involved in the hobby. He will demonstrate one of his machines and have displays of some of his finds, which include relics from Columbia Hall in Lebanon Springs and other local places. One of his most interesting explorations occurred at a Civil War encampment at Fort Powhatan in Virginia, where items from the War of 1812 and from both Union and Confederate armies turned up.
