Come to the Petersburgh Public Library at 7 pm on Wednesday, September 30, to hear about a three week journey in China. Carol Vickers Hovland of Petersburgh and her sister, Jill Vickers of Bridport, VT, will talk and show photos of their May 2009 trip. Carol will focus on the mainly industrial cities visited, Guangzhou, Chongquig and Kunming. By the Chinese, these sisters were perceived as identical Scandinavian twins.
This was not a tour but involved traveling solo or with young Chinese women as guides. These women are Jill’s “Chinese nieces” whom she met while teaching in Guangzhou, and the stories of their lives and the questions they have about contemporary America are sometimes surprising. Amy Shawver, a Petersburgh resident who lived in Guangzhou for five years while teaching at the International School there, and Cecilia Hong, a resident of Hong Kong encountered on this trip, will be present to help field questions.
